Thursday Thoughts (aka 3 Things)

1.

So today my plan called for 6 miles with negative splits. You know those runs where you feel like you’re flying, like you could just go forever…that everything’s in sync. Yeah well that was NOT today’s run! “Holy Craptastic Run Batman!” I will get no style points for today’s run – but negative splits were achieved. Runs like this will make me stronger…or at least that’s what I kept muttering to myself during the run.

2.

I’m trying to keep strength training interesting so I’ve been mixing it up where I can. The latest addition is my TRX Rip Trainer class. The Rip Trainer provides a mix of rotational resistance and core stability which I figure will give me a chance to really work my weaker left side, plus get the added core work I need. I haven’t been the most consistent with my strength work as I want to be so I like the idea of the class to help hold me accountable. I’m in for at least the next 6 weeks.

3.

Going for my first run with my son tomorrow! Cannot wait to see how he does!

Thursday Thoughts: Pre-Race Edition

  • The sharp knee pain from Sunday morphed into dull, but very present knee pain on Monday and Tuesday. So I skipped Tuesday’s 3 miler in favor of a lot of ice and some stretching. Seems to have paid off because today’s intervals felt great – speedy for me at a 9:30 pace and best of all the knee pain was gone!
  • There’s a different forecast every time  I check weather.com so still have no idea what the conditions will be like on Sunday. Being the type A personality that I am, I’ve made a gear list for every possible scenario so bring it on Mother Nature!
  • My TRX class last night and the recent knee pain have proven to me that I need to dedicate more time to strength training. It is one of my goals for 2011, but so far I haven’t been walking the walk with any consistency. But I’m committing to making it a key part of my half marathon training and will probably post my weekly training schedule here to help keep me accountable.

I’ll take another week like that!

Last week was a good one!

There were no snow days, which meant schedules were fairly normal for the first time since the begining of January.

I got all of my planned workouts in except for an easy 3 miler which I opted to skip in favor of yoga to keep my ITB happy. On Friday, I treated myself to a Thai Massage which was heavenly and really helped to relieve some of the pressure/tightness I’ve been feeling in my hips and lower back.

Saturday night we went to a fun event to raise money for a new school playground and I walked away a silent auction winner for a pair of Vibrams! Cannot wait to get them – more on that to come.

And finally on Sunday, I got to run outside again for the first time in 3 weeks!! Without our weekly snow storm I figured the roads would be clear enough to venture out. And despite having to dance around black ice and being a bit tired (did I mention we went out Saturday night…did I mention there was a lot of wine involved?) I was psyched to say goodbye to my new BFF and get my 7 miles outside!!

On the decks for this week:
Rodney Yee's Yoga for BeginnersToday: Yoga. I was tweeting with Sage Roundtree and she forwarded a couple of her podcasts to try. I also just got Rodney Yee’s Yoga for Beginners DVD.

    Tuesday: 4 miles

    Wednesday: My weekly TRX/Pilates class

Thursday:  Tempo run or speedwork — with less than 2 weeks to go until the Hyannis 10k I’ve been trying to figure out which workout is more beneficial.

Friday: It’s suppose to warm up around here (read 40’s) so I’ll probably run again with some yoga as well.

Saturday: my weekly Pilates Reformer group

Sunday: my first attempt at 8 miles!

How was your week? What have you got planned this week?

    Happy Running!

    January rewind

    Good things this month:
    • Logged 56 relatively pain-free miles – ice and foam roller helped to keep the ITB in check.
    • Did not miss one scheduled run despite weekly snow storms of biblical proportion (ok slight exaggeration… or not if you listen to our local weatherman!)
    • Added TRX to my weekly routine and I’m loving it! It kicks my arse in a good way.
    • Finally took on hill work, and on the treadmill no less!
    • Added yoga to my training….ok on the last day of the month, but technically I did add it
    • Completed the first week of the Chopra Center’s 21-day Meditation Challenge. I’m not zen yet, but I’m working on it.
    • 63 of you now following my madness…er…journey — I appreciate the support!
    Things I could do without:
    • Treadmill as my new BFF….I need to start keeping better company. I miss the road. I will take the bitter cold temps if Mother Nature will just give the snow show a rest!
    • Shoveling as a form of cross-training…ok I’m done whining.
    • hmmm…that’s it…short list!
    On the decks for February:
    • More…more TRX, more yoga and more miles…more ice.
    • Want to do a better job paying attention to what I’m eating – I don’t eat a lot of junk, but I could fuel and hydrate better, especially as I hope to increase my miles.
    • Hyannis 10k

      Thursday Thoughts (aka 3 things)

Two runs down and one more for this week — the ITB continues to cooperate! My plan is to stick to 3 runs/week for another week or two and see how my left leg responds.

Started my TRX/Pilates combo classes last night! It was a fantastic way to get abs, triceps, biceps, quads and hamstrings all in one intense hour – the next six weeks should be challenging!

I am on a purging quest! One of the things I love about the start of the new year is this feeling of working from a clean slate. So I am on a mission to tame the clutter — there’s just too much stuff! Over the next couple of months I’m going to systematically work my way through  my house and purge so that by Spring my goal is to only have things in my house that my family really needs, uses and loves. I’m off to the attic to get started. Wish me luck!

      Enjoying the downtime

After a great Christmas weekend filled with family, great food and lots and lots of laughter, I’m still basking in the after Christmas glow!

Today we’re digging out from the blizzard that hit much of the northeast. Building snow forts with the kids and romping through the snow with my oversized puppy definitely count as my cross-training for today!

Had to share a pic of my pup
      in between snow dives!

My ITB has now had a full week of rest and, with Mother Nature’s help, it looks like it may get a day or two more. I figure there’s no point in stressing about it — if I hope to get this ITB under control and be ready to race again in February than this is the way it has to be now.

So my plan this week is to enjoy the rest, get in some yoga, another TRX class and, of course, more “cross-training” with the kids and the pup!

      ITB, TRX and Christmas

      Random Thursday Thoughts…..

Ice, Roll, Run, Aggravate….Repeat — That’s pretty much been the cycle with my left ITB for the past two weeks. But this week I’ve finally waved the white flag and am giving my angry left leg the rest it obviously needs.

I went to a TRX demo class last night and my triceps are still not speaking to me! It was a great strength training workout. I signed up for a 6 week session starting in January to help kick the year off right and to help me to hold to one of my 2011 goals to make strength training part of my regular routine.

There is nothing more magical than seeing Christmas through the eyes of your children! Today was the last day of school for my boys and with Christmas less than 2 days away, they can hardly contain themselves! We’ve watched every holiday special multiple times, and I have to say, the Grinch never gets old for them or me.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!
