Five Things I’m looking forward to this summer

The Summer season is officially here – though you’d never know it based on the current thermometer reading. Nonetheless, I’m ready to embrace all that this summer has to offer. For this week’s Fit Five Friday, I’m sharing just a few things I’m looking forward to this summer.

Five Things I’m looking forward to this summer

Vacation! — We’ve booked our Alaskan cruise and I cannot wait! I’m looking forward to seeing the glaciers, wildlife, whales, and amazing landscape.

Brooks Hype Fest — I’ll be headed to LA in August for the Run Happy Team retreat. Added bonus will be getting to spend time with Wendy!

Catching up with friends — Between life stuff and my work schedule over the past couple of months, I’ve not spent as much time with friends as I’d like. So I’m changing that! I caught up with some friends for dinner earlier this week and have booked a number of lunches/ coffees/dinners/hangouts for the upcoming months.

Time at the beach — I love the beach and yet sadly did not get any time on the sand last year. I’m hoping to change that this year.

College visits — I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that my youngest son is now a senior and applying to colleges this fall.  It’s been so fun to watch my high schooler come into his own during his Junior year and I can’t wait to visit campuses and see what resonates with him.

Bonus item! — Breaking ground for our remodel! We’re scheduled to go before our town’s conservation committee in a couple of weeks and if all goes well we’ll be able to break ground this summer!

Tell me – what are you looking forward to this summer?

Shifting into Summer Mode

This week I got a real taste of summer running as temps touched the upper 80s a few days this week. My high schooler wrapped up classes and finishes his last exam on Monday. I started June off with a long weekend, taking both Friday and Monday off, giving me some quality time on my deck and in my garden…so yep starting to shift into summer mode around here. I was definitely feeling a little out-of-sorts this week (allergies? poor sleep? the heat?) so I appreciated the shortened workweek. My workouts were pretty low-key…here’s how the week played out.

Shifting into Summer Mode

Monday — 2.5-mile walk, Core & Hip mobility work. I woke up feeling every bit of Sunday’s five-mile race and the afternoon of gardening that followed, but getting some movement helped.
Tuesday — Rest day.
Wednesday — 3 miles & Core. OMG, was it a steamy run! This will be my last midday run until we’re well into the Fall!
Thursday — Lower Body Strength.
Friday — 4.5 miles & Core. With the forecast showing the possibility of reaching 90 I made sure to get out in the early morning for this run!
Saturday — 2-mile walk & Yoga.
Sunday — 3 miles & a couple of hours of gardening.

Overall an easy-peasy week. The temps are supposed to drop a bit this week so I’m hoping to start to bump back up my weekly mileage.

Five Ways to Enjoy a Summer Staycation

I was lucky enough to have a bonus week off from work last week – the organization I work for closed the office for the July 4th week, giving us all a paid week off! I was feeling very fried leading into the July 4th holiday and so it was a perfect time for a little staycation!

For today’s Fit Five Friday, I’m sharing five ideas to enjoy your next summer staycation.

Five Ways to Enjoy a Summer Staycation

Play tourist in your hometown – Most cities are full of special attractions that locals often take for granted. Spend a day or two exploring some local attractions.

Create an outdoor oasis — Turn your deck or patio into an outdoor “room”, a space perfect for alfresco dining, reading, working out, or just soaking up some sunshine.

Spend time on a favorite hobby or start a new one — Take advantage of the free time to indulge in a favorite pastime or try your hand at something new.

Set up an at-home spa retreat — How can you argue with a spa day? Collect your favorite skincare treatments for both your face and body, try an at-home mani/pedi, and don’t forget to also focus on your internal wellness with time spent journaling, meditating, and practicing yoga.

Truly unplug — Just because you’re home doesn’t mean you have to stay hyper-connected. Give yourself a break from screentime on your phone – less social media, don’t check your email…you get the picture.

How do you spend time on a staycation?

5 Things on My Summer Must-Do List

It’s Friday again and time for another edition of Fit Five Friday! Last week was all about my summer fitness goals… But this week I’m all about my Summer Must-Do List.

There are lots of things I’m looking forward to this Summer, including some time away. Here are 5 things on my summer must-do list:

Time at the Beach

It’s just not Summer for me if I don’t get to spend some time at the beach!

This view makes me so happy!

Outdoor Music

After seeing Cari’s recent post about attending a concert in the park I’ve been thinking about how nice it would be to sit outside and enjoy some music. I’ve been scanning the local events calendars and it looks like there may be some opportunities on the horizon. Such a great way to spend a summer evening.

Farmers Markets & Street Fairs

A new farmers market just opened in my town last weekend and one of my favorite outdoor street markets has returned. I love the fresh produce and unique items that can be found!

Boston’s SOWA Market makes for a fun Sunday afternoon

Gathering with Friends and Family

Thanks to the pandemic, all of our traditional summer get-togethers were put on hold. I’m really looking forward to hosting as well as getting out and about again.

Alfresco Dining

The pandemic aside, when it comes to the summer, I’ve always enjoyed dining under the stars, at home on the deck, or a restaurant’s outdoor patio.

What are some of your summer must-do’s?

Hello Summer!

Heat and humidity are the names of the game around here this week as we close out the final days of June. It is crazy to think that we are almost to the halfway point of the year. Now seems like a good time to take a step back, reassess, and set some new intentions. And, with the short work week ahead and the holiday weekend, there will be plenty of downtime to just that.

But before I put June in the rearview mirror, here’s how this week’s workouts played out…

Monday — Yoga by Peloton. For the past couple of weeks, yoga has been my Monday thing, and this week was no different.

This was a great combo to release the stress of a Monday!

Tuesday — 3-mile run
Wednesday — 1-mile walk and PT exercises
Thursday — 2.25-mile walk
Friday — 5.4-mile walk catching up with a friend
Saturday — 2.3-mile run followed by a couple of hours of yardwork
Sunday — 3.5-mile run

Despite the heat and humidity, I tried to get outside most days, with an almost even split between running and walking miles. Sleep has been evading me once again, leaving me feeling sluggish many mornings with no desire to run. But, time outdoors is good for the soul, and I really enjoyed my walks.

Always good to opt outside as much as possible!

Today marks day 28 of the Summer Streaker Challenge, and my family team is more than halfway on our out-and-back across the state for the Great Run Across Massachusetts. Challenges like these have been fun and definitely help to keep the motivation up when the dew points get high.

How was your week? Are you embracing the summer weather?

Soaking up the end of summer

Happy Sunday!

It’s been a couple of weeks since I last joined the Weekly Wrap, so as I sit here lazing on the deck I thought I’d check in.

With nothing to train for I have enjoyed just running when I want to. And, given how hectic work has been leading up to a big event last weekend (where I got to don my race director hat again!), this do what you can when you can approach has fit the bill.

For the past couple of weeks, my runs have pretty much hovered around the 3-mile mark at whatever pace my legs have felt like moving. I’ve also spent a lot of quality time with my physical therapist, adding dry needling and electrical stim to the treatment plan.

And this week pretty much followed the same pattern:

Monday:  Physical therapy – so much single leg work, glute bridges, wall sits, and hamstring curls…my legs were jelly.
Tuesday:  3-mile run
Wednesday: Another trip to the physical therapist and more legs of jelly.
Thursday: 3-mile run; spent the afternoon with the family enjoying mini golf, bumper boats, arcade games, and way too much ice cream 😉
Friday:  Rest and a family trek to Mystic Seaport.
Saturday: 4.25-mile run
Sunday:  Rest

With my big work event behind me, this week also meant the start of some much needed time off. I had Thursday and Friday off and will be off again Wednesday through Labor Day this upcoming week!  I’m looking forward to more family day trips, lots of time grilling and chilling on the patio, and just soaking up as much of these final days of summer as I can.

How are you spending these final days of summer?

Weekly Wrap – Summer mode

It’s been almost 2 weeks since my last post and somehow a full month since I last linked up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap. How did that happen?!

Well, the truth is life happened and I haven’t really been in training mode. Once the cranky hammy/glute thing crushed my plans for the Run to Remember Half at the end of May, I kinda threw the training plan out the window.  I have been keeping busy and tailoring my workouts to how the body is feeling on any given day.

So, how did this week shake out?

Monday – 400-meter repeats. I haven’t done speed work in what feels like forever, so I decided to try some repeats on the mill. I also did W3D1 of Rachel’s Abs & Arms Challenge.

Tuesday – I was on the road for work again this time for a trip to the state house, but I did get in the plank jacks and bicycle intervals for the Abs & Arms Challenge.

Wednesday – Rest Day.

Thursday – Strength day on my deck included D3 and D4 from the challenge along with hip/glute work.

Friday — It was an early start to the day for event set up for work, but I was pretty pleased to squeeze in a 3-mile run and W3D5 of the challenge.

Saturday — I was up and out before 4 a.m. to get to the event site and finish prepping before registration opened at 6:45. The event went smoothly and I managed to log 5.4 miles along with the challenge workout.

Sunday — Oh my gosh I was just so dang tired! My whole body screamed stay in bed. I went out in hopes of getting 5, but everything felt sore and it was already ridiculously hot (despite being just 8 a.m.). It started to feel counter-productive to just keep pushing, so I called it at 3 miles and headed home to enjoy the day celebrating Father’s Day with my family.

We’re supposed to be facing record heat this week so sunrise runs will be in the plans. I’m also looking forward to my first kickboxing class (more on that later)… and oh yeah, I’ll be running the BAA 10K with my brother and husband on Sunday.

Tell me how was your week? Are you training for anything at the moment?

It’s not summer unless

My boys are done for the school year and we are officially shifting into summer mode (even if Mother N hasn’t gotten with the plan yet)

While I don’t really have a summer bucket list, there are some summer staples for me that are just a must:

It’s just not summer unless I get to spend some time at the beach.

It’s just not summer unless there’s some family hiking.

It’s just not summer unless I can overindulge in some farm fresh ice cream.

And, speaking of farms, it’s just not summer unless I spend some time at the local farmer’s markets.

It’s just not summer unless there’s alfresco dining, whether at home on the deck or a restaurant’s outdoor patio.

Do you have some staples of summer? Tell me something that is a summer must for you.

Ultimate Coffee Date – July 4th Weekend Edition

Hello July!

Can you believe it’s the 4th of July weekend?! Grab your favorite beverage settle in for another edition of the Ultimate Coffee Date. I’m joining Coco, Lynda and Deborah for this fun link-up! When you’re done here, be sure to check out what the other ladies are dishing about.

If we were having coffee together, I’d tell you we are finally slipping into summer mode around the RWA household. Both boys have started their camps, dinners on the deck have commenced, the grill is in steady use, and in general the pace of things has s-lo-w-e-d down. Thank goodness 🙂

If we were having coffee together, I’d tell you that I’m loving the fact that my oldest, who’s away again at overnight camp, decided to send his first letter home to his younger brother! Just made my heart smile!

If we were having coffee together, I’d tell you that that, while the humidity has been oppresive, summer running is off to a good start. After some consultation with my friend Tina, I signed on to train with RunnersConnect. I’ve been working with them since the begining of June and so far have really been enjoying both the community and the coaching.

If we were having coffee together, I’d tell you that my husband, youngest son and I will all be running the Finish at the 50 at Gillette Stadium tomorrow – they will be running the 5K (my son’s first!), while I’m doing the 10K. With the expected heat, I’ll be treating this as a training run. The race is always fun and there’s a great fireworks display afterwards.

So what would you tell me over coffee?  What have you got planned for this long weekend?

My Summer Fitness Goals

For this week’s #FridayFive, Courtney, Mar, and Cynthia are talking about all things Fitness, so it seemed like the perfect time to share some summer fitness goals!

summer fitness goals

Sharing some summertime fitness goals for today's #FridayFive link-up! What have you got planned? Click To Tweet
  1. Embrace the plan — Training for my fall races has begun and I’m looking forward to diving into it and embracing the hill work, speedwork and long runs to come!
  2. Family running — My youngest son has announced he’d like to run a 5K and has already been asking when we can head to the track. And, my husband J has said he wants to continue to join me on my Saturday long runs (at least until I go beyond 10 miles – his declared cap!)
  3. Enjoy the outdoors — Beyond running, my family does a lot of hiking during the summer months. I’m also looking forward to some time on the tennis courts and maybe a little kayaking.
  4. Continue the slow & steady weight loss — I continue to make progress on this 2016 goal, and know being a few pounds lighter will go a long way on those hot long runs.
  5. Keep getting stronger — As I mentioned in my race recap, I can feel the benefits of the strength work starting to take hold. Trainer Stacy is planning to up the workouts so I can keep upping the mileage.
