Shifting into Summer Mode

This week I got a real taste of summer running as temps touched the upper 80s a few days this week. My high schooler wrapped up classes and finishes his last exam on Monday. I started June off with a long weekend, taking both Friday and Monday off, giving me some quality time on my deck and in my garden…so yep starting to shift into summer mode around here. I was definitely feeling a little out-of-sorts this week (allergies? poor sleep? the heat?) so I appreciated the shortened workweek. My workouts were pretty low-key…here’s how the week played out.

Shifting into Summer Mode

Monday — 2.5-mile walk, Core & Hip mobility work. I woke up feeling every bit of Sunday’s five-mile race and the afternoon of gardening that followed, but getting some movement helped.
Tuesday — Rest day.
Wednesday — 3 miles & Core. OMG, was it a steamy run! This will be my last midday run until we’re well into the Fall!
Thursday — Lower Body Strength.
Friday — 4.5 miles & Core. With the forecast showing the possibility of reaching 90 I made sure to get out in the early morning for this run!
Saturday — 2-mile walk & Yoga.
Sunday — 3 miles & a couple of hours of gardening.

Overall an easy-peasy week. The temps are supposed to drop a bit this week so I’m hoping to start to bump back up my weekly mileage.

How was your week? Did you do any racing? Have you shifted into summer mode yet?

  1. Yes, I guess the threat of 90 degrees would get you out of bed early! i think it’s hard to adjust to the heat at first and maybe that’s why you felt off this week. But you still had some good workouts! I hope you have a good week ahead and fully embrace summer mode.

  2. Yep, we have to get moving pretty early now! I actually don’t mind getting up early in the summer–even when I was up at 4:30 this morning to get ready for my race, it was light out. Glad to see you getting out there even in the heat.

What are your boys doing for the summer?

    • Yeah I actually prefer early morning running so the heat will help me get back in the habit.

Lots of college visits and rock band camp for my youngest and my oldest wants to take a break from classes and just work…now he just needs to find a job 😉

  3. We all had a taste of those warm temps this week! Guess I am going to have to get out there earlier now too, Sigh…Hope you feel better this week

  4. Sounds like it got hot everywhere this week! I did a couple hours of gardening this afternoon, and boy was it hot & steamy! Honestly, that sometimes feels more exhausting than a full-fledged road race. I love the early-early hours in the summertime!

  5. Every weekend I wish I got out earlier, but I don’t remember that when I’m snuggled in bed!

I hope you have a good week!

  6. Midday on warm summer days can be scorching! We have nice summer weather but Irish style, so nice sunshine with 20-ish degrees (68-ishF) and a bit of wind. To me it would be perfect weather for both walking and running. If the weather is hotter and more humid, early mornings are the best!
Gardening is a great workout, and hip & core work is important. Then some good miles in there too. Looks like a good week to me!

  7. Nice week.

This was our first full week off from school, so yes? It’s summer mode. Now the boys are leaving, so I’m trying to hit all my deadlines so I can have some full R&R while they are away.

    Great week!

  8. I think we’ve backslid from Summer to Spring. While I miss all the gorgeous weather we’ve been having, we really do need the rain. Got out to run and walk Bandit before the rain today.

Sounds like the long-er weekend did you a lot of good! Enjoy Summer mode.

  9. it’s hard to acclimate when the summer comes in with a bang. Good that you took some time for yourself, that you recognised how much you needed it. and still a good week for you even if not feeling 100%! It’s definitely warming up here as well and you can tell people are confused about what to wear! It can be a very pleasant temp in the AM, maybe needing a light jacket, but then blazing by noon. This weekend it’s supposed to reach the high 80’s/possibly 90. Ugh. I’m glad I started my walking in the morning challenge because i see a lot of morning runs in my future.

  10. It went warm then it’s gone colder here again – I was doing my rehab run in a long-sleeve technical tshirt this morning but then out in a tshirt for a walk at lunchtime when the sun had come out.
