Running on Empty – Review & Giveaway

A couple of weeks ago, the great people at Penguin Group sent me a copy of Marshall Ulrich’s Running on Empty. Admittedly, the book sat on my bedside table for a bit — too many projects to finish, a long to do list, etc. got in the way. But, once I did settle down to read the book, I was instantly hooked!

For those of you who don’t know, the book chronicles Ulrich’s record-breaking run across the U.S. and gives a rare and unflinching look into the world of ultrarunning. But this is so much more than a book about running — it’s really a story of a man who finds himself through this incredible journey. Driven by the stress and grief of losing his wife to cancer, running becomes his escape, salvation and obsession. He pushes himself to find bigger and greater challenges — his list of accomplishments is other-worldly — yet his matter-of-fact writing style tends to downplay all he’s achieved. He’s very forthright in examining the toll his endurance achievements takes on his relationships with his family – the question of pursuing one’s passions while striking a balance with family life really resonated with me.

This book is a quick read and you do not have to be a runner to appreciate the themes of challenges/personal goals, achievements, loss, perseverance, drive, love and relationships presented.

I’m happy to say that thanks to the people at Penguin, I have an extra copy to share with one of you! If you would like to win a copy of Running on Empty:

  • Be a follower or become one.
  • Extra entries by posting about this giveaway on your blog or tweeting about it.

Please leave me a comment for each. I’ll pick a winner via random.org on 6/3.

Signs with a Little Attitude

Last month, Megan at Build A Sign contacted me with an opportunity to design a couple of things and try out their products. Sounded like fun so I said I would love to!

With Build A Sign, you can make a sign for just about everything and it was fun playing around with different ideas of what to make. The site was really easy to use – in fact my eight year old son had fun helping me with my designs.

In the end, I went with a bumper sticker (with one of my favorite quotes), a window cling and a fantastic banner my boys are planning to hold up at my next race!

The Bumper Sticker and Window Cling
(by the way, the sticker’s 2nd line says “everybody fails at something” –
kinda looks like “falls” – my bad with the camera angle!)

My boys with their new cheer banner!

I’m really psyched with the way everything came out  – I especially love the banner and can’t wait to see it along the race route! The whole process couldn’t have been easier – a big thanks to Megan!  She also gave me extra copies of both the window clings and bumper stickers to share; so if you’d like one to add to your collection, shoot me an email at runningwithattitude (at) yahoo.com.

Just plugging along…

The goal this morning was simple….just get in a couple of pain-free miles. After having it out with my angry left leg last week, I gave in to a couple days of rest, stretching and ice. But this morning I was determined to get out on the road, no matter how slow and just get a short loop done.  Well let me tell you it was S-L-O-W! I didn’t stop but at times I’m not sure you could truthfully call what I was doing “running.” But no matter – there was no pain and that was a huge win! I’m learning that in running the path to bigger victories and accomplishments is paved with the much smaller ones. Today was one of those small ones and I’ll take it!

So I continue to plug along – week 3 with Smart Coach is underway. The goal is to get in 4 days of running as long as the left side stays under control – if not, 1 day will be on the bike, plus 2 days of pilates….and LOTS of stretching (kinda goes without saying, right?!)

Catching Excellence

Perfection is not attainable,
but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
– Vince Lombardi
I start my 10k training plan this week! After checking out a bunch of plans, I’m going with Runner’s World Smart Coach. I like that with Smart Coach you can input info on your last race, weekly mileage, how hard you want to train and for how long and it gives you a “customized” training plan for free!

With this plan I’ll be running 3 days a week and can fit in my two pilates classes and some weight training and bike work and still have one day for rest. I’ll also be mixing in some speed work, tempo runs and hill repeats as the weeks go on. I also decided to build in a little cushion in my timing and not take the training program right up to race day just to give myself some wiggle room…..cause life happens, right?

You can check out Smart Coach on the Runner’s World website http://www.runnersworld.com

Cross-training Mommy Style

So does playing soccer with my 4 yr-old while simultaneously playing football with my German Shepherd count towards my cross-training for this week? Or, given how much running back and forth across the yard I did with the dog, maybe I should count it as speedwork 🙂 The beauty of having kids and a dog is that you’re pretty much guaranteed to get a workout built into every day…maybe not always the one you planned, but a workout nonetheless! Tomorrow I’ll be back in the gym for a weights session with Trainer Mike – only three more training sessions scheduled so I plan to make the most of them!
