Nutrition Update – New Recipes

Cookbook1

One of my goals for this month is return to healthier eating, after letting a lot of things slide towards the end of the summer. So the timing could not have been better when I was contacted by the great folks at Runner’s World to review their new cookbook!

The Runner’s World Cookbook is a collection of 150 of the magazine’s best recipes – and from my first quick scan of the book it looks like there’s something for everybody no matter your training goals or dietary needs.

A school event kept me from busting out a recipe last night but I’ll be diving in today! Full review coming soon – and by the way, the cookbook will be available on October 1st.

Nutrition Update: My Food Frenemy

In my quest to get to the bottom of my GI issues, I have been keeping a food journal – I admit not as faithfully as I probably need to, but I am starting to see some patterns worth noting.

A big thing that’s jumped off the page for me is the trouble dairy seems to be causing. “OK – not a problem” I thought I will simply eliminate all things dairy….except there’s one little indulgence I’m still struggling with….

Pistachio – my favorite!

Ice cream! Sweet, creamy, cool refreshing ice cream. Ice cream is one of my all time favorite summer indulgences. I’ve often joked that I run so I can eat ice cream. Well in true frenemy-style, this favorite treat of mine is wreaking havoc with my running! So while I’m not yet willing to cut all ties with ice cream, we will definitely be seeing a lot less of each other this summer.

Do you have a food frenemy?

Running and eating

One of my goals for 2013 is to set back and take a hard look at my nutrition. As I have said before while I don’t eat a lot of junk, I know there’s room for some improvement. Lately, I’ve been feeling really sluggish during my runs – this morning’s slogfest was a perfect example!  I need to not only re-examine what works best as fuel during my runs, but look at what I’m eating both before and after a run – not to mention what I’m eating on rest days.

This isn’t about dieting per se (though I am about 6 pounds above “fighting weight” at the moment) – it’s really about fueling my body for optimum health.  So it’s time to do some research  like testing out fueling options to see beyond whether or not they agree with my stomach to whether they’re actually providing real benefit. It’s time to do some reading, try out some new recipes and make some shifts in my overall diet.

My brother-in-law gave me Scott Jurek’s Eat & Run – which I have been dying to read and now seems like a good time to start. I’ll also be posting more regularly about nutrition – what’s working and what’s not and hope you’ll share tips and tricks that work for you.

Just Stylin’

The lovely Kittee over at Running Half Crazy was sweet enough to bestow this lovely award on me. Now many of you have seen this so you know the rules:

  • Make a post and link back to the person who tagged you. – If you have not checked out Kittee’s blog, please stop by and say hi!
  • Share 7 things about yourself
  • Pass the award along to 7 other bloggers
Hmm…ok…so 7 things about me….
  1. I’m mom to two little boys who are really quite the characters and keep me on my toes. It’s funny I always knew that I would be mom to boys. And, I’m accepting the fact that my house will never be quiet!
  2.  I love food! I love to cook and I love to eat. Sharing a great meal with family and friends and lots of wine is a perfect evening!
  3.  I use to own a artisan olive oil company. I love running my own business and given that I’ve lost my “self-edit” button it’s probably better that I work for myself. I’m looking for my next biz idea.
  4. I’m a huge football fan – my hubs actually gave me tickets to see my favorite football team as an anniversary gift (at the time the 49ers in Candlestick) – still one of the best gifts ever 🙂
  5. I’m an avid reader – though at the moment I’m way behind on my reading wish list.
  6. I love to decorate – a wall of paint samples can seriously make me giddy!
  7. And, yes Emz, I did play rubgy. I played in college first as a hooker (my parents are so proud!) and then I quickly wised up and got out of the scrum to play fly-half. You gotta love a sport where you beat the tar out of each other and then share a beer or two (or twelve!)

Now to pass this on…since many of you have already received this award and because I have too many favorites I’m breaking the rules and I’m not going to pick.  But if you haven’t played yet and want to, consider yourself tagged!

Have a Great Weekend!!
