May Coffee Talk

Happy Friday!

I am so happy that it’s Friday! I’m starting off the weekend with a little catch-up over the Ultimate Coffee Date hosted by Coco and Deborah. So grab a mug of your favorite beverage and let’s chat for a bit!

Over coffee, I’d tell you that I recently made a return to outdoor dining! I caught up with a friend recently for lunch and we tested out igloo dining. It was an interesting hybrid between outdoor and indoor dining. It was so fun to be dining out – I felt pretty comfortable because the igloo was well ventilated and the friend I had lunch with was fully vaccinated.

Over coffee, I would tell you that May 1 was College Decision Day, and my son’s chosen to become a Golden Knight at Clarkson University! He had some great choices and I’m so proud of him.

Which of course means that over coffee, I would tell you it’s graduation month! In just a couple of weeks, my oldest will be graduating high school and I’m left to wonder how the years went by so quickly. I am so grateful that his school has figured out how to hold an in-person graduation. I can’t wait to see him walk across that stage!

Over coffee, I would tell how much I am looking forward to a week-long staycation at the month. Work continues to be a grind and I am really feeling fried (just too few bodies for all that needs to get done and I have way too much on my plate!). Taking the last week off of the month will time out perfectly with my son coming home from school, getting my second vaccine, and the Memorial Day long weekend.

And, while the staycation will be a nice break, over coffee I would tell you that we’re on the hunt for a real summer vacation. I need a change of scenery! We’re hoping to find something within a reasonable driving distance (not ready to jump on a plane just yet!) – so the question remains beach vs mountains? My criteria are simple – someplace fairly low-keyed, remote, and relaxing.

Now I’d tell you that my cup is empty and I need a refill. So your turn, what would you tell me over coffee?

  1. I’ve never heard of igloo dining! That sounds interesting! Congrats to your son. So glad they can have an in-person graduation. A staycatation later this month sounds perfect!

  2. Those igloos were pretty popular around here this past year, lol! When I was in the city recently with my sister, there are all these little huts on the sidewalks outside of restaurants. Now that things are opening back up, I wonder if they will go away?

Congrats to your son! Yes, the years really go by fast!

  3. We have had a few dining out experiences, but have not “done the hut.” They probably have some of those in the big city (Des Moines), but not locally. Huge congrats to your son! You definitely have an exciting month on deck 😉

  4. Congrats to your son! And a RL graduation — one of my nieces is graduating college. Her graduation isn’t IRL, and even my SIL says she probably won’t view it. 🙁

I am pressing my husband to go away for a few days, also in driving distance, sometime this Summer, too. I even know where I want to go. This coming weekend doesn’t really count as a vacation!

    • It makes me sad to see the number of colleges still having to do virtual graduations. My husband and I are feeling pretty lucky that we’ll get to see him walk across the stage in person!

  5. Congrats to your son that is exciting! I am having my first indoor dining experience tonight nervous but excited at the same time. We are going to Nantucket at the end of June and I am really looking forward to it! Hope you are able to get away sometime too

    • I hope the indoor dining went well. I will probably ease my way back to that once fully vaccinated.

Your trip to Nantucket should be fun – I’m betting there will be quite a bit open on the island by then.

  6. Darlene says

My hubby and I did igloo dining for our anniversary. So fun.

    Congrats to your son.

Never have taken a staycation but sounds like a great idea. Enjoy.

    • I’m really itching to get away, but with work being so stressful these past couple of months, a few days off at home will be good for my sanity!

  7. Congrats to you son, and yay for in-person graduation! I feel you on vacation, but I’m also suffering from paralysis — can I really make plans now? Seems so unreal!

  8. Congrats to your son! Clarkson is a great school. I have been itching for a vacation too and I’m glad we finally planned a trip up to Vermont next month for a week…it’ll be so good to get away!

    • Thanks Janelle! It’s funny my husband just mentioned Vermont as an option this morning. I need to DM you and find out where you’re headed!

  9. Congrats to your son! Great choice!

I am SO with you on needing a REAL vacation and a few days off!

I’m going to a restaurant inside with a few fully vaxxed friends this weekend. The restaurant is large and has partitions and I hope it will feel ok!

  10. Congratulations to your son!!! What a relief to have that decision made, right? We’re also having an in-person graduation- so excited that we don’t have to miss out on that.
I’ve never seen igloo dining before! Probably because in Florida it’s warm enough to eat outside year round. What a great idea. Glad you’re starting to get out and about, and thinking about a real vacation! We all need something to look forward to.

    • It is such a relief to be done with the whole process and see him happy with his choice! That’s great that you’re also having an in-person graduation!

  11. Igloo dining looks interesting! I don’t know where I could find it near me. We are currently fully vaccinated and willing to eat at locations with outdoor dining sites. Maybe indoor dining soon!

    Congrats to you son!

  12. Congrats on your son! Exciting news. One of the restaurants by my house has igloo dining as well. I’ve seen it while out on a run and have been curious about it. My vote is the beach!!!

    • It’s so funny I’m usually all about the beach, but this year I honestly don’t have a preference…as long as it’s away! LOL

  13. Congratulations to your son! That’s fabulous!

We don’t have the igloos here, but in a few weeks, we are having dinner in a boho yurt. I can’t wait for that.

    Have the best weekend!

  14. Congrats to your son!! That’s awesome that you planned a staycation for the end of this month since it’s going to be such a busy month!

  15. I’ve seen the igloos but haven’t checked them out yet!

Congrats to your son + happy Mother’s Day to you!

I’d have a hard time choosing between beach vs mountains — I love both! I feel like you can’t go wrong with either!

  16. igloo dining! awesome 🙂 what a great concept!

I can imagine you need a vacation. a staycation AND a real change of scenery. I would love that too. I really really long to get away. Just have to hang in there I guess. I would go for beach, but that’s definitely me!

    • It’s amazing to me how much I crave a change of scenery. The trick is we still want to find something pretty low-keyed…no interest in being in crowds yet.

  17. Those igloos were prevalent here over the winter but now I don’t see them anymore. Glad you enjoyed some dining out! A summer vacay sounds fabulous about now. I’m wiped out after the big college moveout. Congrats again to your son! So exciting!

  18. Congrats to your son!
Those igloos look weird. I haven’t seen them here. At first it looked like and incubator but then you said they are well ventilated. 😉

    • I have to admit that my first thought was that the igloos would be suffocatingly warm, but the ventilation was pretty good. I can’t imagine sitting in one as it gets warmer out – I’m sure they’ll disappear soon.

  19. Congratulations to your son!
For me, summer – mountains to get away from the humidity. Would Western Mass, Stowe or others appeal? I love coastal NH, but it’s just too muggy for me.
I feel you on Wiley Coyote meme. Hugs

    • Thanks Cari – the need to get away for a vacation is real! The Berkshires are definitely an option…I agree about wanting to avoid the humidity.
