Thursday Thoughts

It’s not the Heat it’s the Humidity….we’ve been in the midst of a heat wave since the weekend so that means the return to early morning runs! Making the shift is always a little tough the first few days, but I do love the feeling of being home and done long before the kids have to be out the door for school.

And speaking of school….we have finally hit the home stretch! Tomorrow is the last day 🙂 Hard to believe that I will soon be mom to a 2nd grader and a middle-schooler! As we’ve been inching closer to the last day of school, the boys have been steadily adding to our Summer Bucket List – they’ve got big plans for the next 9 1/2 weeks. Let the fun begin!

ramps-smallIn the “What is she thinking category?“…I’ve been debating between the 5K and 10K for next week’s Finish at the 50 and then I got an email with this picture. Those are ramps inside Gillette Stadium – they’re also the final 2.2 miles of the 10K course! We all know how much I hate don’t love hills, especially at the end of a run, but believe it or not I’ve decided I’m going to do the 10K. If this crazy heat continues I may be cursing this decision…stay tuned 😉

Don’t forget….my Designer Whey Sustained Energy giveaway  ends tonight at 11:00 p.m. EST

Thursday Thoughts: Vacation Edition

We arrived in beautiful Canandaigua Lake yesterday – visiting J’s family and enjoying the last hurrah of summer before the madness of school and sports schedules take over once again.

I woke up to this beautiful view this morning…seriously my little camera cannot do this justice!

Then I went out and ran this! I don’t think this picture does this hill justice either….

Despite being on vacation, Thursdays still means it’s hill repeat day and lucky for me (did I really just say lucky?), there are no shortage of hills in the Finger Lakes region. The real trick was finding one that wasn’t going to completely shread my quads 🙂

Got the run done, the boys have already dragged me out on to the tennis court and now they’re begging to go swimming. I think they’re on a mission to see how much we can cram into the first day! I cannot blame them – summer feels like it’s gone by much too fast. Need to make the most of every last day. And, besides, I’m quite sure there will be a cold beer or two waiting for me at the end of the day!

Thursday Thoughts – Pre-race edition

I actually have my first race of the year this weekend – the Wampanoag Old-fashioned 10 Miler and Fast 5K. I’m running the 10.

It’s funny  – I know absolutely nothing about this race except for the fact that the course is described as “a rolling course.” Gotta say the “rolling” part makes me nervous cause hills and I are not friends….we’re barely  civilized acquaintances.

So why in the world run it? Couple of reasons….
     1) I’m trying to face my fear… er intense dislike… um hill “issue” head on
     2) The timing of this race made it a good tune-up for the R’n’R USA Half which is just over 4 weeks away
     3) J is running it  – this will be his first time doing a double digit race and I wanted to support him

Up until now I haven’t given much thought to race goals or strategy. I’d like to run the final 5 faster than the first 5,  but I don’t have an overall time in mind. J and I are going to drive the course on Saturday so we’ll see just what “rolling” means and that might help me get my head around a race strategy.

Do you always go into a race with a strategy & goals? Do you run “tune-up” races?
