Mid-year Check-in and July Goals

6 months down…6 months to go.

While I would have much preferred to have trained for and participated in the races I had on the calendar for the first half of this year, I have found a bit of a silver lining that I’m holding on to.

In the absence of racing, I have had the space to step back and let my right hip heal. I’m especially grateful that I was able to safely visit my physical therapist – I have no doubt that being able to work with him made a big difference. Without a training plan, I ran when I wanted to, and when it felt good to do so, and I really embraced my walks. I made weekly time on my yoga mat a thing and enjoyed a range of at-home strength workouts. I logged just 260.3 running miles for the first half of the year and I’m a-ok with that.

I can now go into the 2nd half of the year, feeling healthy – and that’s always a good thing.

So now what? My goals for July are pretty simple:

— Finish the Great Run Across Massachusetts with my family (we have less than 100 miles to go at this point)

— Complete the Crush Your Core program on Peloton

— Stick with my monthly goal of at least 50 run miles

— Foam roll and stretch daily

Have you found some silver linings so far this year?

  1. That’s great that you had the time to let your hip heal! 2020 was just the right year for that.
I like your monthly goal to run 50 miles a month. Very doable and it keeps you fit.

  2. I think you are so wise to take the time to really heal — and to appreciate that. While luckily I didn’t have to heal from anything, I did embrace the opportunity to pull back & let my body relax more. While still being active.

I think we runners definitely have a tendency to push too hard, so it’s good to pull back sometimes.

I’ll have to check out the crush your core program. 🙂 My core always needs work!

  3. That is great that your hip is feeling better. I have to really keep on top of my stretching or it flare up. I have no excuse though. After you finish the crush your core-I really like Matty’s 21 “Encore” challenge. I am now doing it for a second time. So many classes so little time!

  4. I love your positive attitude!

For me it would be that I am working with a new coach and am liking my runs. With no races I was no motivated to run at all. My coach helped me snap out of my funky mood. Plus, the virtual races/challenges also helped.

  5. I’m so glad you got to see your PT and that your hip is better. The Peloton core workouts and Jess Sims’ plank parties have really got me strengthening more core, which I hope will pay off with my running too!

  6. Having time to allow your hip to heal is a silver lining for sure! I didn’t really have running goals set this year. I’m so grateful though that my Bermuda race is February went off before everything locked down.
