Week 5 – February Freeze & Goals

February has rolled in and with it has come some very frigid weather. Ma Nature also thought it would be fun to serve up another storm, this time a mix of snow and ice, making getting outdoors a challenge. But of course, the workouts happened…here’s a quick peek at how the week played out.

Week 5 – February Freeze

Monday — Full Body Strength & Core. I like starting the week with a solid strength workout and mixing in Jess’ Flash 15 classes has quickly become a Monday favorite. Robin’s Eminem 20-min core class was not for the faint of heart!

Tuesday — 3-mile run, Core & Stretch. Run, slip, slide & repeat. Road conditions were suspect in some spots but I managed to stay upright.

Wednesday — 1.5-mile walk & Yoga.
Thursday — 4-mile run & Stretch. “Feels like” temps in the low single digits had me on the treadmill.
Friday — Boxing, Upper Body Strength & Stretch. Ice/Snow storm outside so decided to mix up the workouts inside with one of Peloton’s new boxing classes. Rad’s Eminem class was fun and combined with some upper-body strength left with me with jelly arms.

Gloves not needed, but so fun!

Saturday — 4.3-mile run, Core & Stretch. With everything heavily glazed over, I reluctantly returned to the treadmill. I’m so glad Kim suggested the BHM Block Party live run. The energy between Andrian & Jess was great and even though I couldn’t see Kim on the Leaderboard it was fun knowing she was running too.

Sunday — Currently coffee, though the plan is a Peloton ride later.

February Goals

I’ve also set a couple of goals for the month:

  • Expand My Running Base — I’ll be shifting to 4 days/week of running and inching my “long run” to 6 miles.
  • Peloton’s Boxing Contender — Complete 90 minutes of boxing in 7 days.
  • Return to Food Prep — I fell off the food prep wagon around the holidays, so I’m long overdue to get back to this!

What have you got planned for February?

  1. Yes on the frigid weather and even worse here.

But like you, I try to run outside.

I am also trying to run at least 4 days. Once my halfs are over, I can relax on the long run distance. If I am not training I used to run 10 miles but now I’m fine with 6-8 as a base.

Hope things get milder weather wise for both of us.

  2. I like your February goals! Peloton has boxing classes? I’m intrigued.
Like you, I’m slowly working up my running mileage. I decided to run every other day in January and that worked so well I’m continuing it for February. I’m also adding in more strength, while keeping up some yoga classes. It’s challenging to fit it all in some days!
Hope you have some warmer temps (and less ice) this week.

    • It’s great that the “every other day” plan is working for you. I agree it is a challenge to fit it all in some days. 4 days of running should still give me enough time for strength classes and some Peloton rides.

  3. What a fun mix of workouts! I’ve never tried boxing.

I’m working on upping my miles as well. I’ve got a 15 mile trail race in April, so I want to be ready for that. I think I’ll be ok, tho. That pool running has been such a gift!

    • Running seems to be going well for you so I bet you’ll have no trouble with the 15-miler.

I love boxing as a workout! The studio I used to go to was a covid casualty, but I’ve been thinking about getting a bag if I can figure out where in my house to put one 😉

  4. **FacePalm** I forgot about the boxing classes! A seriously good problem is the variety of Peloton classes, but I have a tough time limiting myself so as to not overdo it. You had a great week…sorry Ma Nature has not been playing nice with you either (I think she needs her meds adjusted, LOL).

  5. That Eminem core was killer! Yikes 🙂 weighted planks are hard.

Hopefully conditions improve outside as you add more running days!

  6. Well done on getting sorted even though there was snow and ice. We’re so lucky there’s no more ice now, though it could come back. I’m waiting to find out what the plan is for my wonky hand from that half-marathon fall, as I have a physio appointment tomorrow, and I need to up my distances in case I find I’ve got into the London Marathon this month!

  7. The boxing classes are really fun and a great workout. Your weather not so much fun. Hope this week is a little warmer and easier to get out.

  8. I feel like I should eventually re-take Robin’s Eminem core class because it was so good but then I remember how sore my abs were lol.

I really wish that Peloton would allow tread users to see app users and vice versa. I would have loved to give you a high five during that run!

  9. Thanks for reminding me about the boxing classes! I need to check those out.

The weather this week definitely made things very challenging.

  10. Great idea on kicking off the week with a Flash 15. I wonder how they’d work for me as a pre-run warm-up? I can do 10-15 min before Scooby gets antsy about going outside.;-). Thanks to you and Kim I’ve got that GHM run stacked and downloaded!

I think we’re supposed to have a milder week this week, but it will still be in the 20s in the morning. Once I’ve bundled up for that, I feel like I should go for a longer run (4-5, vs 3) to make all the effort worth it!

    • I’m loving pairing the Flash 15s with other strength classes – I hadn’t thought about it as a run warm-up. Then again I’ve been pretty lazy about warming up before I head out.

We’ve got some 40s in the forecast this week so I’m looking to see where I can slip in a midday run or two.

  11. A friend of mine has taken up boxing (I think it’s been a year now) and she says it is the best decision she ever made!! She absolutely loves it! So I suspect you will enjoy that boxing challenge! Plus you look super cool with those gloves on!

    • Thanks, Shathiso 🙂 I used to take kickboxing classes and loved it – such a great workout! It’s great to hear that your friend is enjoying boxing – have you ever thought about trying it?

  12. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen icicles.

It is very rare that I default to the treadmill or indoor running, but if it’s that cold, I could see having to change things up. Yikes.

  13. I keep hearing good things about that block party run. I’ve only tried running with the peloton app once and didn’t love it, but may have to try again.

Sounds like you have a good plan for the rest of February!

    • Overall I’m not a huge fan of using the Peloton app for running, but am starting to find a couple of instructors that help keep the mill interesting.

  14. I love snow, but when it’s icy, and everything gets slippery, not so much anymore. Impressive that you still managed to get out despite the conditions.

After my exams in January, I slipped out of most of my good non-fitness and eating habits. I plan to work on that February. My goal is to finish three books before the end of the month.
