A Runfession or Two

Happy Friday and welcome to another edition of Fit Five Friday hosted by DarleneRenéeJennZenaida, and me!

It’s the last Friday of the month, so I’m linking up with Marcia to share a Runfession or two…so let’s get started.

March Runfessions

I runfess that I am in a running rut…on the one hand, I have no complaints because my runs have felt pretty good! But on the other hand, the runs are all starting to feel and look the same. I need to mix up the distances, routes, paces…something. It’s time to shake things up a bit I think.

I runfess that I decided to take the deferral credit on my entry in the New England 10 Miler Series. While this race series had announced a tentative in-person schedule (after being postponed from 2020), I shared over coffee that race organizers have already had to alter the schedule given COVID restrictions. With still so much uncertainty around when I will be vaccinated and varying state restrictions, I opted to take the deferral credit. The credit gives me the option to register for any of the races offered by this race group later in the year or in 2022. I runfess that I’m happier not stressing about if and when these races might go off. I’m still fairly confident that we won’t be racing in this area much before the summer.

In the battle between wearing multiple layers and catching the sunrise vs fewer layers and warmer afternoon sunshine, I runfess that the warmer temps are winning. I’m just tired of wearing all the layers so, for now, I’m letting the weather app dictate the time of day that I run.

Any runfessions to share? Do you let the weather dictate your runs?

  1. I think i would have done the same as you with the deferral credit. its so hard not knowing if races will happen and waiting until the last minute to find out! I don’t blame you for waiting until it warms up to run outside. I am definitely enjoying running in shorts on the warmer days!

    • I’m so grateful that this race series offered the deferral credit – it’s just too hard trying to figure out how to plan and train right now.

  2. That deferral credit is a nice feature of that racing series! We have several races returning, but with COVID protocol….and limited registrations available. I’ve had to dodge a few bad- weather-morning runs recently, as well. As long as we get it done, right?

  3. Darlene S. Cardillo says

Yes yes. The weather often dictates when I run. Sunrises are awesome but still too cold so I wait until after work.

And the running route rut. I am trying to mix it up but if I run at lunch there’s not much time.

I am running real races but I know not everyone is comfortable. The local ones are run by the same company and they are very safe.

  4. I swear this pandemic has been a nightmare for race directors. I too will opt for the warmer, less-layered run, although there’s an increased risk a later run may not happen at all. The struggle is real! Thanks for linking!

    • I can only imagine how hard it’s been (and continues to be) for RDs!

Yeah, the downside of pushing the run to later is colliding schedules – that’s definitely happened on more than one occasion.

  5. While I don’t usually run in the afternoon, I will run later in the morning — and am happy that I’m able to.

Sounds like deferring your race has taken a load off for you! Races will be back — someday!

    • I definitely appreciate not having to worry about training for a race that may or may not happen – especially since my motivation to run double-digits is nonexistent right now.

  6. I feel like you and I are living parallel lives when it comes to running. The pandemic has certainly messed things up, hasn’t it? I’m content to just keep moving.

  7. I am with you on being bored with my running routes — even after 8 weeks off from running outside. I should drive to a different spot, but I’m not that motivated. I think I would have made the same call on the race series. Hopefully you can do some later this year.

    • I’ve thought about driving to a different spot too, but so far just haven’t been motivated enough to do so – it’s a vicious circle because a different spot might be just what I need to spark my running.

  8. I have written about the stress of racing and deferring twice this week as well. I don’t want to do or how to train at the moment. Mixing up my route this week helped a ton!

    • Yep, I totally agree – it’s hard to know how to train or to be motivated to train if you don’t know if the race is actually going to happen.

  9. I think it’s smart to defer. It’s hard to plan your training if you’re not sure the race will go off as planned. At least they didn’t just go virtual.

    • Exactly! And, yes I’m happy they didn’t automatically go virtual. It’s a great race series so I’m really hoping to get back to supporting them soon.

  10. I think that’s smart on the races – better to wait and not worry. I signed up for a COVID safe 10 miler here and now I’m worried about running 10 miles without stopping – LOL! Mostly kidding!

I let the weather dictate my running – mostly the WIND here!

  11. I’m glad that races are providing a variety of options for deferrals in these crazy times. It sounds like you made the right call!

The only way I can get out of a running rut is to train for a race, lol! I can never figure out interesting things to do on my own!

  12. I like running at a warmer time of day in the spring (and winter) too. By summer, you will be getting out there early to beat the heat. Now is a good time (post-Daylight Savings Time springing ahead) to sleep in a little bit and run later in the day when it is warmer.

I think you made a good choice to defer to later in the year. It’s not worth the stress of worrying about whether the race is really going to happen or not.

    • Yeah, I’m feeling good about my race choice – just too hard to figure out a training plan if you have no idea if the race will even happen. I’m hoping things will be more predictable in the fall.

  13. Mixing things up has definitely helped me stay motivated. Once a week, I change up the route. It makes a difference.

  14. I am still a morning runner. However, this week I’ve been waking up later than usual and not time to run. So given that I’ve had to do it after school. Once it is summer then morning is obviously the best time to run for me. Anything later and I am asking for trouble! Yes, do mix up your runs. It does get boring doing the same workouts.

  15. omg the layering is killing me!! Only here it doesn’t matter time of day! So far I haven’t found a happy medium!

I sometimes also long for variation in my runs. Or I think about doing some intervals or speed training. then I talk myself off the ledge because right now I just need to keep following PT advise.. but I do understand.

and as for in person races – I only have a couple deferrals and I’m still taking them. I’ll likely lose my Rotterdam one, unless it still doesn’t happen here in October. With the sh*tshow happening here that’s a real likely possibility it will be cancelled again.

  16. I have not had any in person races nor have signed up for any. Hopefully this fall it will happen. Yes, warmer weather always makes me want to run longer.
