I heart 10-mile races

This is my public plea to race directors everywhere (but especially here in New England) to please host more 10-mile races!

Heart

The 10-miler is hands down my favorite race distance – yet sadly I’m finding fewer and fewer options available. ย So what’s to love about the 10 mile distance? To me it’s the perfect “middle distance.”

Just long enough — The 10-miler is just long enough (vs. say a 10K) that you can ease into your pace for the first few miles before really diving into the race. Personally I struggle with 10K pacing!

Just short enough — That last 5K of a half marathon can get ugly for me sometimes…perhaps because I push too hard in the middle miles? I can still hold my form together for 10 miles, run strong and not feel like I’m dying!

Still a challenge — Racing double digits is a challenge! The beauty of 10-mile races isย that they offer enough of a challenge without requiring too long of a training build-up to reach the distance – depending on your weekly mileage, you can be ready to race in just a few weeks.

What’s your favorite race distance? Do you think 10-milers are getting harder to find?

Erika, Patty and April are all talking about their fave race distances today – Be sure to stop by and check out them out!

  6. I totally agree. It is my favorite distance for all those reasons. And guess what? I am running one this weekend! Very excited–it’s new to our area and is a cross-country course. Should be a ball!

  7. I love the 10 miler as well and agree that it’s hard to find. Although the DC area does have some good ones…Army 10 Miler, Cherry Blossom, GW Parkway, Reston 10 miler!

  8. My favorite distance will probably always be the marathon. But I do love the 10k too!
I don’t think they are getting harder to find, but you just have to know where to look. I do think they get overlooked and people think 5k’s would be more fun, but I disagree for the money, fun and race 10k is a great distance!

  9. My favorite distance is a 5K b/c I don’t have to train for it. I have never run 10 miles in my LIFE!!!! Doesn’t mean I can’t try it though.

  10. Agree! I think 10 miles is my favorite as well. There are only a couple of them here and one is the week after my marathon so no go.

I’ve never done a 10 mile race, but I do really enjoy the Gate River Run 15k which is pretty close in distance. 10k is my favorite but I suspect as I get more experience with longer races that a 10 miler will feel just right. Thanks for linking up with us today!

  12. The 10 miler and half distances are my favorite (with the 10 having the slight lead – just short enough). Come to DC!!! I’ve also been meaning to sign up for the Broad Street 10 Miler in Philly – that seems like a great race too.

  14. My favorite distance is the 10K! I’ve done 10 milers and they were ok, but I wasn’t in the shape I am in now, so they are probably better than before. There is a 10 mile race in NJ called the Perfect 10 miler put on by CGI racing. It’s supposed to a fun one and I’m excited to do it for the first time this month!

  15. I’ve never actually raced a 10-miler, but I love that distance in training. Long enough to really demand careful planning and fueling, but it seems easier from a recovery standpoint than 13.1. If I find a 10-miler in my area, I’ll definitely give it a try!

  16. Yes, there aren’t many 10 milers. I ran one in June…Lake George to Bolton Landing in upstate NY…loved it. I am running the perfect 10 in NJ in a few weeks.
