Five things over August Coffee

Happy Friday everyone!

Is there a nicer way to kick off a weekend than with a little catch-up with friends? So for this week’s Fit Five Friday, I’m joining Coco and Deborah for the Ultimate Coffee Date. I’ve got my iced coffee in hand, let’s chat! (This post contains affiliate links).

Five Things over August Coffee

Over coffee, I would tell you that we are in the middle of a birthday bonanza at my house! My youngest turned 16 last Thursday, I celebrated another trip around the sun on Wednesday, and today, my oldest turns 19! My hubby’s b-day is in a couple of weeks. Let’s hope all of this celebrating doesn’t add too much to my waistline 🙂

Over coffee, I would tell you that I cannot believe we still have not made it to the beach this summer. Seriously these weeks have been flying by and I’m starting to think this may be one thing from my summer “must do” list that may not get done. While our next couple of weekends are accounted for, I’m still holding out hope of hitting the sand before the month’s over.

Over coffee, I would tell you with Covid numbers rising with the delta variant I’m not feeling very confident about the future of fall racing.  I have two in-person races on the calendar and watching the news lately makes me wonder if they’re going to happen. Sigh.

Over coffee, I would tell you how much I want to make more time to read. While on vacation I read The Last Thing He Told Me – it was a great page-turner! I loved getting lost in the story, and have promised myself that I’m going to spend a little less time scrolling on my phone and more time reading. Next up, Stronger than Dark.

Over coffee, I would tell you we’re just 3 short weeks away from moving my son into his college dorm. We’re knee-deep in shopping for “all the things” – it’s feeling very real now.

What would you tell me over coffee? Any good book suggestions? Have you made it to the beach this summer?

  1. Summer is always so short, isn’t it? I’m still trying to make the most of it, in spite of my injury. I too am worried about COVID shutting things down again. It seems like more people are getting vaccinated-maybe we will get on top of this thing.

I can’t believe I haven’t read that book–it sounds great! I’ll add it to my TBR list.

  2. In recent years, my book-reading time has dwindled. I still read a lot, but it’s mainly online stuff or blogs. My bad. I Just can’t seem to get that routine back, though, and it’s a bummer. Isn’t it amazing all the stuff you need to acquire for the college gig? I don’t remember going through that when I was the college-bound kid LOL

  3. Oh, thanks for the book rec. I think Amazon keeps showing that one to me. I too am doubting we will get to the beach this year. I had a hard time finding a dog sitter for Scooby and hotel prices are through the roof! I haven’t given up yet.

It’s amazing how much you need to buy for students living in such tiny dorm rooms! Good luck with all that.

  4. All the best with the big college sendoff! It is an amazing and very emotional milestone. I hope you make it to the beach. I have not, and I doubt it’ll happen. The beaches here don’t thrill me. I am sad that the delta variant seems to be bearing down on us. I believe a new mask mandate is coming soon. Sigh, I’m a little surprised marathons like Boston, Berlin and Chicago seem to be going forward as planned. How??

  5. I read that one as well it was really good. I am in the Daniel Silva Book right now. I also really like the Laura Hildebrand book-Golden Girl. We are getting in a few beach days this month in New Jersey so that should be fun, Hope you get there too!

  6. Awww, so many celebrations and changes! And time is going fast so it makes it harder to savor. I am with you about the future of fall racing. There are some big races in the state that are on for the fall, and I know from the emails that the race directors jumped through hoops to get the permits. I wonder now if they will be cancelled.

  7. Sadly the beach is very far away from us. Lake Placid didn’t happen. Our ME trip might be in jeopardy, too. Sign.

Wow! That is a whole lot of birthdays in one month! My parents had birthdays in the same month, as do my sister & BIL (different month, though). Mine & Mr. Judy’s are roughly 6 months apart though.

There’s always something to celebrate, right?

  8. Yep! We’re shopping for dorm things as well. So exciting (and sad, for me… not for my son.)
Happy Birthday to everyone! August is quite a month in your house, right?
I think fall/winter races will take place down here, because Florida’s answer to Covid is to pretend it doesn’t exist. I’m not saying that’s a good thing- but races will most likely happen.

  9. I have Stronger Than the Dark on Mt. TBR too. I love my reading, but also wish I had/made more time for it.
Happy birthdays. We have a window like that in the fall and it’s crazy,
    Fingers crossed for our Halfs

  10. I am not signed up for any Fall races but I am starting to wonder if any will happen, especially the larger marathons. Huge events like that make me so nervous!

I hope that you’re able to get to the beach before the month is over!

  11. Darlene S. Cardillo says

I read all the time but quickly forget the names. Lately it’s all about Diane chamberlain.

No beach time yet. I hope to change that at the end of the month.

I have registered for a few races. Fingers crossed that they happen.

The mask mandate is on the way back.

  12. I hope you get to go to the beach sometime this summer! I’m gonna have to check out The Last Thing He Told Me — it’s been a while since I’ve read for fun and I definitely miss it.

Best of luck to you in settling your son in for college!

  13. How exciting with all of the birthdays!! No races for me but I do wonder if the big marathons will take place. I know there are a couple in October and it would suck to cancel/postpone them again.

  14. Happy Birthday to all!

    I loved that book, too!

I’m worried about the fall races. I’m training for NYC but have a back up number for Chicago – just in case. I’ll do something with the training, I hope!

  15. Happiest of birthdays to you all! August is my birth month too!

I’m very curious to see how races proceed with COVID-19 cases rising again…I hope your races don’t get cancelled!

I’m on the hunt for some books as well. I’m rereading some Harry Potter right now because I needed a cleansing after reading Sharp Objects…I think I want to stick with lighter books for a bit!
