Week 10: It Will Come

“It will come” – that was my mantra during today’s run/walk intervals. A gentle reminder that this return to running will be slower than I want (a lot slower!), but eventually I will get there. Where is “there” you ask? I’d love to get back to 5 mile runs – 5 miles has often been a sweet spot for me so that seems as good a “there” as any.

In the meantime, week 10 was another week of doing what I can — strength training, hip mobility work & my PT exercises, some time on the Peloton bike, a little yoga, and lots of walking. I had hit the pause button again on my run attempts because my hip/quad had turned especially cranky about a week ago. Things have been feeling better the past few days so I decided to join my son at the track this morning as he’s gearing up for Lacrosse season. 30 minutes of run/walk intervals completed!

My sports ortho and I have agreed to try a cortisone shot so I have that scheduled for Wednesday morning. Fingers crossed!

I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

How was your week? Have you ever had a long break from running?

  1. I hope you’re able to run comfortably again soon. I haven’t run in about six weeks, but I know it’s what’s best for my back right now. My longest break from running, though, was in 2011 when I first injured my back and then again in 2020 when I re-injured it.

  2. You will get back to 5 miles runs, hang in there! I think I shared that I had hip flexor tendonits and a quad strain last year. I said the exact same thing you did… if I can just get back to being able to run 5 miles I will be happy. And now I am, it just took time. Injuries are so frustrating but you are doing everything you can. You will be back to normal soon!

  3. I hope the cortisone shot gives you a jump start!

I’ve been thinking about what my goal is — probably 5-6 miles would be good, as I could cover most of my favorite routes.

How fun to go to the track with your son!

  4. It was a year ago that I got my cortisone shot to relieve some of the back crankiness I’d been experiencing (I had to postpone my Week of Pi, starting it on my birthday instead of finishing on the big day…which is how I remember the day of said shot, LOL). I hope all goes well for you! It made a big difference for me. And, getting back to the 5-mile distance is within reach…you totally got this <3

  5. I’m running only 90 sec. I’m ok as long as I can run pain free.

I hope your pain goes away for good.

You’ll get there. You have a great attitude and many blogger friends/supporters.

  6. Fingers crossed that the steroid shot helps take away some pain. There’s nothing wrong with taking it slow and doing run walk intervals. i hope you’ll be back to your 5 miles soon!

  7. Michelle, it is ALWAYS slower than we want it to be! I’ve been thinking about that as well lately while I rehab my ankle. i also have an appointment on Wednesday- not for a cortisone shot, but hopefully for some ART or similar therapies. Yes- we will get there. IT WILL COME! I hope the shot helps you.

  8. Deborah Brooks says

It takes way more time than we would like to to but you are on your way and you will get there. Intervals are great and really have helped me

  9. You’re doing great! I know how frustrating it can be to have to be patient and slow to return, but it doesn’t make it any easier. You’re doing great, even if it doesn’t always feel like it!

  10. way to embrace such a nice variety of activity as you heal your injury. I hope the cortisone gives you some relief from the pain.

  11. I hope the cortisone shot helps, I have never tried one. I’m sure it will offer relief.

Keep your head up, it will get better!
