Wrapping up January and Setting February Goals

It’s been a long month…but here we are on the last day and ready to step into February. Before I lay out my goals for the upcoming month, here’s a quick run down of this week’s workouts:

Monday — Peloton 20-minute ride, 20-min Bodyweight Strength, and Yoga. This may have been my favorite class combo of the week, but boy oh boy I had forgotten how challenging Pigeon Pose is for my very tight right hip!

Tuesday — 3-mile run and Yoga.
Wednesday — Peloton 20-minute ride, 10-min Core for Runners, and Yoga. Took another of the Year of Yes rides and snagged a new PR!

The satisfaction of a new PR!

Thursday — Yoga and a rest day.
Friday — 3-mile run plus Yoga. It was -8 with the windchill so I was more than content to hop on the mill for this one.
Saturday — Peloton 30-min Britney Spears Ride, 20-min Britney Spears Full Body Strength plus yoga. Such a fun combination, but I was really feeling it after the 100 squats!
Sunday — As I sit and write this over coffee, yoga is done and the plan is to run 3 – 4 miles. Right now it is a balmy 7 degrees with a feels like of -2 so I’m waiting on the warm-up. As much as I actually don’t mind winter running, single-digit temps and my Raynaud’s Syndrome don’t play well together!

February Goals

I had 4 goals for January:

— Daily yoga
— Peloton Winter Launch Challenge (1 class/day)
— 62.5 miles
— Return to mindful eating and leave the deserts alone

I hit all but the mileage goal – to be honest, I let go of the mileage goal pretty early on as I prioritized getting my hip to a happy place. And, now that I’m running pain-free I would say that was a wise call. There’s still plenty of time left in the year to hit my ZOOMA Run Club goal of 750 run/walk miles.

So here’s what I’m targeting for February:

— Daily stretching or yoga
— Matty’s enCORE28 Challenge on Peloton (daily core classes)
— 50 miles
— Pre-hab/PT exercises 2x’s/week

The theme here is to keep doing the things necessary to keep my hip happy, while building some mileage.

How was your January? Any big goals for the new month?

  1. I need some goals, but with all the snow we’ve gotten, I feel a little restricted! I am getting ready to finish my heavy strength cycle and will test my 1 rep maxes this month. Otherwise, it’s just same old same old. I’m grateful that February is a short month.

    • Yeah, we have a Nor’easter hitting tomorrow so I’m expecting to be indoors for my workouts more than out depending on the ice. Good luck with your rep maxes!

  2. I will be joining you for Matty’s 28 core challenge. He is my go to for core. The daily yoga and stretching really help. Glad you are feeling better again. Smart to adust your goals. No injuries needed here!

  3. You have great goals! Keeping you hip happy is just the right priority and the daily yoga will totally help. I am going to do a balance challenge this month, and then maybe I will get into the swing of the yoga thing.

    Keep up the great work!

  4. I’ve been really loving the Year of Yes classes as well – I always feel so powerful when I finish the classes and the instructors leave me with much to think about.

I am still working on my goals for February but will link up for Fit Five Friday with my post!

    • I know what you mean about giving you much to think about. I sometimes feel like I need to record the classes so I can remember some of the things they say.

Looking forward to seeing what you’ve got planned for the month!

  5. Yeah, unless something changes with the weather, my fitness goal is just to watch a lot of TV while running on the TM. And that’s OK! Congrats on the pain free running! That’s a far greater outcome than getting miles.

  6. I’m so glad the hip is feeling so good!!!! I’m going to try to take a cue from you and do some daily yoga/stretching for February…emphasis on “try.” I really need to fine-tune my ab/core routine and get a little more disciplined in that arena. Congrats on the Peloton PR 😉

    • Thanks Kim 🙂 It was a late day ride so the extra burst of energy for the PR was a nice surprise.

If I can make the daily happen, I know you can do it. I think the mix of yoga and stretching vs. just yoga makes it more doable.

  7. Sounds like a really good plan! Its much better to back off now, especially while the weather is bad, to set yourself up for a successful year.

  8. Congrats on completing your daily yoga goal! I’m going to try Matty’s core program and see how many moves I can’t do …..
I think I’ve run in the teens a few times in my life. Single digits would be a no go!

  9. Congrats on the PR!
ooh will look for Matty’s challenge. I feel you on pain free running. It’s so wonderful when we attain it and worth doing all that’s needed to hang on to it.
I’m not typically a yoga person but the hip/hamstring/glute ones are amazing PT reinforcement.

    • Matty’s challenge is posted in his IG stories. I took a screenshot of the first week so if you need me to send it to you let me know.

Those hamstrings and hip yoga classes have been life savers!

      • Thanks! I got tomorrow’s, but the one with the full week must have expired. Mind sending if you get the chance? Love the hashtag and need to do more core so this is the perfect reason with a snow day

  10. You did great in January Michelle! And your goals look good too. I haven’t decided yet on my goals for Feb, but I have decided I will have a couple 🙂 So that’s already something!

  11. Everything sounds good! Congratulations on the return to mindful eating- that can be the hardest part of January. Yep, it’s officially February and time to set some new goals! I have to get on that.
Have a great week, enjoy your workouts and pain-free running!

  12. A happy hip is definitely a priority! Great job on your goals. My only goal for February is to hopefully make it to Florida soon and soak up some D from the sun. I’m supplementing like crazy but still not feeling that great.

  13. Feeling good is my main goal for Feb, LOL! I never set mileage goals, and I’m always happy to see someone prioritizing feeling good over clinging to that goal. After all, you’ve only got one body!

Ok, I have to put my Yoga teacher cap on. Pigeon is a GREAT post for runners BUT — it can actually be very hard on the body, particularly knees. There are other poses that do a good job of stretching out those areas that aren’t quite so hard on the body.

One of the easiest is simple reclining figure 4 — or figure 4 at the wall. Just make sure you flex the foot that’s not on the mat to protect your knee. Give it a try!

Bound ankle (also called Butterfly in Yin Yoga) is another great one — it can even be done laying down. Take the soles of your feet together and let your knees fall open.

  14. Pigeon pose hurts but feels good too! You did great in February. I’ve seen Matty’s challenge on social media and feel sad to miss out. Have fun with it! We have so much snow which makes running very difficult right now. Well, I can still get my mile in but no actual training.

  15. Well done on the yoga, that’s great! I’ve let go of my monthly running goal as I was getting exhausted pursuing it and that’s not needed. I will try to follow your stretch/yoga example!
