Fall running and new challenges

Mother Nature has gifted us with some glorious fall weather lately and I couldn’t be happier – especially since I’ve got a few new run challenges on the horizon! But before I get to those, here’s a quick run down on the week that was…

Monday — Yoga
Tuesday — 3-mile run plus core
Wednesday — 1.25 -mile power walk plus core
Thursday — Peloton Strength – upper body and core classes
Friday — 2.5-mile run plus Pelo strength
Saturday — 4-mile run plus core
Sunday — Currently still lingering over coffee, but planning to get a walk and some time on my yoga mat.

New Challenges

Running has felt good lately (thanks I’m sure in part to the cool fall weather we’ve been having), and I’m finally feeling motivated to take on a couple of run challenges and virtual races. Here’s what I’ve got planned:

Hadrian’s Wall – I’ve had this one on my radar since I first heard about it earlier this summer, so when my brother called me looking for a challenge to take on, I knew what I wanted to do. We’ll each be trying to cover the 90 miles over the next few weeks – should be fun to see who finishes first!

Womxn Run the Vote — This relay kicks off tomorrow and benefits Black Voters Matter (BVM), a nationally recognized advocacy and policy group that works to boost Black voter turnout at elections on every level. The week-long relay covers 680 miles from Atlanta to Washington DC, following a route from Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site in Atlanta to the MLK Jr. National Memorial in DC.  BVM is a great advocacy group so I’m psyched to be logging some miles for this cause. I’ll be running with Team SnaptheVote!

I’ve also got a couple of virtual races lined up. I had registered for the Detroit Free Press International Half Marathon early this year and was psyched to run it as a BibRave Pro. Of course, like all other major races, this one has gone virtual. The Detroit races are selling out quickly, but if you’re interested in joining me be sure to use code BIBRAVEDET20 for 10% off your registration.

Additionally, I signed up for the Boston Athletic Association’s #FinishStrong Challenge, which consists of running their annual distance medley (5K, 10K, and half marathon) as virtual runs during the final three months of the year. I missed getting to run a BAA event this year (kind of a tradition with me) so this feels like a good fit and will give me something to focus on as the year winds down. I also like that the challenge also supports some great causes.

Has Fall weather made an appearance where you are? Do you have any challenges or virtual races coming up?

I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. Hadrain’s wall was a unique and fun challenge. I have one more that became virtual in October. Then, who knows? Enjoy this amazing weather!

  2. This week we got a taste of fall weather too — it definitely helps with my running mojo. Thanks for sharing about BVM — sounds like an organization with a very important mission.

  3. I love that you have signed up for so many challenges and virtual races, and so cool that you’re doing one with your brother! I’m also signed up for the Womxn Run the Vote Relay next week and I’m really looking forward to it!

  4. These upcoming challenges all sound exciting, Michelle! Oddly, we had a small summer relapse last week (which I thoroughly enjoyed), but I think Fall is here to stay for awhile. Enjoy that weather!!

  5. Now that I’ve done my first virtual race of the fall I’m really excited (and a little bit scared) to be back in the racing game. I have a virtual half next weekend and then another half and 10 miler in October which is a lot of long races for me to be doing all at once, but that’s pandemic scheduling for you. Although I don’t see run travel being a big part of my future, I would really like to run the Detroit half some day – I’d be running in both another state and another country at the same time.

  6. I’ve got a live race coming up in 2 weeks but I haven’t heard anything about it, so I’m having my doubts. I’ll do it virtually if that’s the case. And I have a virtual race in Novermber too. I’ve been wearing ‘our shoes’ because don’t we all want to run happy these days?

  7. These sound like great races and challenges! The fall weather has definitely left me feeling refreshed and wanting to run more.

  8. I didnt realise they were repeating Hadrian’s Wall or I’d have signed up for it! I’m in Gloucester on my Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge and somewhere near the Hudson River on my 401 Foundation US challenge (I won’t make it in the time but should get to North Carolina) and this week I’m doing a do what you want challenge for a local LGBTQ running group – they get half the money and an ally charity they support the other half. I’m committing to doing a marathon in the week and they have a podcast thing with a guided run through the city I’ll do with a friend at the weekend. Meant to be warm and sunny until tomorrow here but it’s very very misty at the moment.

Best of luck with your challenges, all look fun and the Womxn Run the Vote is brilliant.

  9. Ooh, so many fun challenges! BVM & BAA speak to me the most — although I think this is the year I don’t do a half. I suppose I could run part & walk part. I’ll look into it!

I so agree with you on how much more enticing running is now. Good luck with your challenges!

  10. I’m sitting here wearing a jacket, so yes, fall has arrived! Haha! Hadrian’s Wall is a fun one. The app is awesome! That BAA bundle is tempting as well….except I don’t want the half.

    • I don’t want the half either. That’s the one thing stopping me. I tried contacting the B.A.A to see if they were offering the opportunity to sign up for individual races, I called, emailed contacted on FB and nobody had gotten back to me. One thing though, in person the 5k is $55 and the 10k is $65. So online is almost like getting the half for free, not losing any money, unless they offer the races individually. But I’m afraid it will fill up before while waiting.

      • Sarah I don’t think they are splitting it up this year. I figure I’ll be far from “race ready” but I’m going to use it as motivation to return to some double-digit runs which I haven’t done in forever!

    • I hear you about the half – it was almost the reason I didn’t sign on 😉

  11. fall arrived.I hate it. I am not motivated to go out if I have to wear layers. And it’s dark after work.

Virtuals are tempting but I prefer the real thing.

  12. It was in the low 80s today! Breezy! I practically had to put on a sweatshirt!

I did the Hadrian’s Wall Challenge, and it was a lot of fun. I was also really impressed with both the tracking app and the medal.

  13. Those are fun challenges! I regret not signing up for the Womxn Run the Vote relay.

Fall is here and I love it. It is my favorite season for running.
