Warning: Frustrated Runner Ahead

Let me just get this out there…this was not a pretty week from a training standpoint. My run in the rain on Tuesday included slipping on an oil slick in the road – while I didn’t go down, I ended up gimpy.  A cranky left knee meant there was no more running until I attempted Saturday morning’s long run. I managed to eek out 6.5 miles – they weren’t easy, but got them done. This girl is not a happy camper…

But, I’m not going to wallow. I can keep my cardio going on the Arc Trainer; so while I will try to run again this week, there may need to be more cross-training.

I’m happy to say that I’m 22 days into the Winter Challenge, and my BGR team has moved into the top 5 teams for total mileage!  Since the Challenge allows for both walking and running, I can keep contributing to my team even if it needs to be a brisk walk.

I’m meeting up with Trainer Stacy on Wednesday, and just joined a 10 x 10 plank challenge started by one of my fellow SPIbelt ambassadors (10 mins of planking every day for 10 days) – so there will be a big focus on strength work this week.

And, hopefully there will be some running…fingers crossed!

Tell me – how do you keep busy when you can’t run?

  2. Ugh! I hope your knee is 100% soon! It’s so frustrating when things like that happen.

  3. Ugh to the oil slick! I had an ice incident, so I know what you speak of! I’m so surprised I stayed upright…

Feel better! And keep on planking. That core strength will pay off.

  4. Oh, OUCH!!!! I love all that planking you have on tap! LIke you, I also try to keep my cardio up when I can’t do it in the running shoes…usually walking or stair climbing (but the stairs might not be good for your knee). I slipped on the ice last week…and didn’t go down too hard, but my poor hamstring got pretty over-extended. Not pretty!

  5. Sorry to hear that you have not been able to run lately. Hopefully soon enough you will be back out there. Planking every day sounds like a good challenge, I rarely do that!

  6. So very frustrating when you slip and tweak something! Hopefully you get some relief and it does not become a nagging issue for you. My week was pretty solid al though the majority of training has been indoors with a sick kiddo at home.

  7. Oh, no! Those slips can be just as hard on our bodies as a fall. I’m dealing with a little issue myself. Cross training will be on my schedule too in the form of cycling. I hope you feel better soon! Thanks for linking, Michelle!

  8. Yikes! Sorry about the slip. I hope it’s nothing serious. With this hamstring my running has been minimal and sloooow. Very frustrating. Spinning and swimming have been my go-to substitutes.

  9. Oh man, slipping while on the run is one of my biggest fears, so sorry that happened to you! I hope your knee feels better ASAP!

Glad to hear the challenge is going well! And you’re gonna do 10 minutes of planks?! I couldn’t even work my way up to 5 minutes, so kudos!

  10. Be careful out there!! I do everything I can when I’m not running, which is a regular thing now. Hiking, walking, biking, yoga, bodypump. You name it. If my knee likes it, I do it!! Hoping for a speedy recovery for you!

  11. Wow 10 minutes of planking a day is huge! I am not sure I could plank for that long but of course now I want to try. Hope you have a better week this week. We have also had a lot of rainy runs this week no fun

  12. I hope your slip doesn’t cause any longer term problems than it already has. These days I get very nervous running in the rain when the temps are lower because of a fear of iciness – now I’ve got to be concerned about oil slicks! Stay safe out there!

  13. So sorry you slipped! When I was injured, I weight lifted and spent time on the elliptical machine. Hope this week goes better for you!

  14. ooch! I hope your knee gets better soon! I was injured once a few years and couldn’t run for 3 months. It was SO HARD. I ended up just doing a lot of lifting and strength training to keep up my fitness as much as possible.

  15. Good to rest that knee till it is completely healed. That must have been a scary mishap!

  16. Ack! This does not sound fun. I’m sorry to hear about your cranky knee. When I can’t run I cycle. It gets boring and hard to reach the same intensity but it’s better than nothing.

  17. I am so sorry you are not running yet. Hoping you get some good news soon because you deserve it!

  19. I’m sorry. It’s hard to have sucky weeks. 🙁 You got this girl!

  20. Ugh! So sorry you’re hurt!

If I can’t run I walk or I bike. I will do yoga and get myself into spin and HIIT classes. Granted, I go crazy on the inside, but I do try to keep myself busy.

  22. Ugh! I hate falling! But glad you have an ARC trainer to use – that is probably my favorite piece of gym equipment!

  23. Sorry to hear you hurt your knee. Being injured is the worst … I’m still sorting out an injury. I try to focus on other activities like yoga, soccer or skiing at the moment.

  24. Hope your knee feels better soon!!

About 2 years ago, I had issues with plantar fasciitis and I realized I needed to do something for a while that didn’t pound my feet. So I switched to road cycling for the summer, and fell in love with it! Now I do both. I wasn’t happy to have the injury, but in a way I was glad that it gave me the incentive to try something new that I ended up really liking.

  25. I did the 5-minute plank a day for 7 days and I really could feel my abs burning! Course I did wait and try to do it all in one setting with as few a breaks as I could muster.
10 minutes a day would really be challenging for sure! Good luck with that! 🙂

  26. So sorry, I totally understand how frustrating it is to not be able train the way you want. Hope you are able to get back to it as soon as possible.

  28. So annoying when things like that happen! Not like a SERIOUSLY injury but something annoying like that where you have to take some days off or cross train. Hope you’re feeling better soon!
