12-week reality check

A quick glance at the calendar the other day revealed that I have just 12 weeks (ok a little less than 12) until the Newport 10 miler….hmmm hello reality check!

Calvin & Hobbs reality

Yes there’s enough time to get my act together, but I need to get my butt in gear. My willy-nilly approach to running is not going to cut it. I’ve pretty much been winging it when I hit the gym – if I feel like dealing with the mill then I run but sometimes the lure of the Arc Trainer or TRX or other strength work is stronger.

So I’ve mapped out a 12-week plan – a mix of 2 days of strength work, 2 days of yoga and 3 days of running – time to get going!

Do you usually train with a plan or do you wing it?

  1. You’ll get there with 12 weeks! I sort of plan but not really. I guess I know in my head what I need to be doing to get where I want and just kind of move along week by week.

  2. I love working with a plan but now I am relying on my running coach to create it for me! It sounds like you’ve got a good plan…I need to up my yoga game, I really miss it and once my race is done I plan to get back into it.

  3. 12 weeks is a ton of time! You got this. I have used a plan in the past and think I will again for my tri this summer.

  4. I follow a plan but that’s gotten pretty loose lately I’ve been so distracted with swimming. I’m in a similar boat with a 10 miler on 4/18 I feel very undertrained for right now and I’m know darn well there will be no long run happening in the islands. Sigh.

  5. Sounds like you have a great plan! 12 weeks is enough time to train for your 10 miler. I do follow a schedule as it helps me to follow something. If I didn’t, it would be a lot easier for me to slack and not do as much.

  6. I have to have a plan or else I lose my way, get distracted and then end up quitting early.

  8. Good luck! Sounds like a good plan you’re using. I have to have a plan or I get completely lost or sidetracked. I function better with a plan and routine.

  9. That sounds like a good, balanced plan. I’ve upped my running to 3x/week with 5 weeks to go to the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler. I’m sure all those other workouts are doing more than you think.
