Trying new things and big changes

There are some big changes going on in the RWA household! But, before I dive into that, here’s a brief recap of this past week’s workouts.

Monday – Rest day
Tuesday – Strength day including W4D1 and D2 of the Abs & Arms Challenge along with a PT series for hips and glutes.

Kai decided he needed to supervise!

Wednesday – 3 miles in a rare break in the temps.
Thursday – D3 and 4 of the Abs & Arms Challenge then a trip to see my massage therapist for some work on my hammy.
Friday – 1st kickboxing class!
Saturday – D5 and 6 of the Challenge and some yoga
Sunday – BAA 10K (re-cap to come)

Trying new things!

I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been feeling the need to shake-up my cross training and wanted to try some new things. Trying kickboxing has been on my list for a while and I’m so glad I finally signed up for a class. This class kicked my butt and I had a blast! I’ll be heading back to the studio again this week!

Also in the new things category – my husband J and I just signed on to macro diet program. Friends of ours have had some great results with the program and we’ve decided to give it a try to help re-set our eating. I’ll be sharing more about this as time goes on.

Ch ch ch changes!

My apologies to the late, great David Bowie…

I mentioned before that my oldest had a really tough school year. I’ve intentionally not gotten into details but suffice it to say it was a long, stressful year for everyone. But the good news is there’s light at the end of this tunnel – he’s off to a great new school in fall that he’s really excited about! And, while I’m struggling to get used to the idea that he’ll be a boarding student I’m really excited for him and know this will be a good fit.

All good stuff – there’s just one small glitch. The school calendar just came out and the big fall parents weekend is the same weekend as MCM. Nooooo! Ah but yes…

There’s just no way I cannot be there for the first big weekend at his new school. How could I possibly enjoy MCM knowing I wasn’t there? I can’t – As much as I was looking forward to MCM the choice is easy. Family first! I’m not giving up on my dream to run MCM either, I’ll just be deferring until 2019. (And, given my ongoing hammy issues, this may be a blessing in disguise).

So now without MCM on the horizon, I find myself with a wide open fall as I had no other races on the calendar. Time to get planning!

Tell me something about your week? Have you tried any new workouts?

I’m joining Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.

  1. That’s a bummer about MCM, but I totally agree..family first. No brainer 😉 My “newest” thing would be consistent speedwork. I’m not a fan of speedwork, but I have been doing it pretty consistently for the past few months…and that’s a major priority twist for me.

  2. Ahhhhh, but you are 100% doing the right thing and you will have ZERO regrets over this decision. Sorry your hammy is still acting up. rickboxing sounds like a fun activity.

  3. So exciting for your son! You will never regret choosing him over MCM, right? Thankfully you can also run it next year.
I tried a video boxing class (with some kicking) recently and it was awkwardly hard, haha. Burned a lot of calories though!

    • I am so grateful MCM has a deferral program! And I know what you mean about awkwardly hard – I’m sure I didn’t look too smooth in my first class LOL!

  4. Oh, Michelle, I feel for you. I didn’t share the details on my blog but as I’ve alluded to, we’ve had lots of struggles with my oldest. So I get it. Everything goes on the back burner when it comes to the family. We only get one chance to get it right, don’t we? And isn’t this what running a marathon teaches us? Thankfully, MCM has the deferral policy. That’s got to make you feel completely at ease with your decision. Hugs.

    • Thanks, Wendy. It is so true – everything goes on the back burner. I am so glad MCM has a deferral plan – just more time to prepare to crush it, right? 😉

  5. Definitely family first! There will always be time for a marathon! I’m glad your son has found a school that he can thrive in and that you are comfortable with …because when they’re happy, Mom’s happy, right???

Hope that hamstring starts cooperating soon ..with a wide open fall, you have so many options for halfs and 10ks!!

  6. Oh wow MCM….but of course family comes first and thank heavens for the deferral option. Here’s to the new school being just what your son needs to thrive. So glad you enjoyed kickboxing!

  7. Kickboxing is a great workout, I really enjoyed the class when we used to have it offered at work!

I’m glad your son is going to a new school that will be a better fit – bummer that you can’t do MCM, but at least you’ll be able to defer for 2019!

No new workouts for me, though I am starting to dedicate time on the exercise bike since it’s like the only cardio I’m approved to do right now thanks to PF!

  8. Family first, of course.

You’ll be better prepared in 2019.

Any NY races in your future?

  9. Aw I’m sorry about MCM. I will be running for charity. I sure hope the kids don’t have anything pop up that weekend! It’s hard scheduling things and I’ve missed a lot of races this year.

  10. There are always other races to do and family definitely comes first. Definitely no question! I hope his new school is a better fit for him. A few of us are going to do the Philly Half in November and they do have a full the day before. I love kickboxing and it’s one of my fave workouts each week. Hope you like it!

    • Thanks Deb! The Philly Half is a good one – I ran it a few years ago and loved the crowd support! I’m thinking about doing RnR Philly in September.

  11. That kickboxing class sounds fun, glad you liked it! And it makes a lot of sense to defer MCM, it sounds like that will be a big weekend at your son’s new school.

  12. Kickboxing is cool!! I definitely have that on my very long list of things to try! And bummer about MCM but yeah, to me it’s completely logical that you will skip it this year. It will be there next year – and being there for your son on that particular day is just more important!

I haven’t tried any new workouts really but I have been going to bodypump now more regularly. it takes me a while to try new things because I just feel like a total dweeb. Seriously, you’d think at the age of almost 50 I would get over that but nope, still a 10 year old not getting picked for the team…

    • If you get the chance to try a kickboxing class do it! I’m sure I don’t look as badass as I feel LOL, but it is a heck of a lot of fun…and a great workout!

  13. We are in full summer mode at our house. We love summer around here. I’m starting to run more with other people again which I’m loving.

  14. Yay! Kickboxing is so much fun! I haven’t done it in a while but I want to get back into it! Glad you had a great time!

  15. Always family first!! Although it’s sad that you have to defer MCM to next year, it does open up your calendar for Fall! I’m

  16. Kickboxing sounds fun! I’m glad you found a school better suited for your son. You can go ahead and look forward to having MCM on your 2019 calendar — when everyone else is trying to get in! Thanks for linking!

  17. For what it’s worth, you are totally making the right choice, but I understand how tough it is to give up MCM, too. I’m so glad your son has a shiny, new year ahead of him. Sometimes, a change of scenery and routine is the perfect reset button. Wishing him (and you) all the best.

We’ve just been doing summer as best we can. It’s been hot and busy and all around pretty good. Running has been hard, but the weather will get cooler again. Eventually.

  18. I completely agree, family comes first. And like you said, maybe deferring MCM is a blessing in disguise. I hope that the new school is a good fit for the entire family.

  19. Even though it is a bummer to miss MCM, you are doing the right thing for your family! And so important that your son will be in a school that works for him!

  20. Family is the top priority always. Kickboxing is my favourite alternative to running. Really brings out that hidden hardcore personality 🙂
