My Simple Fix is Now Not So Simple

Well I’ve been sitting with this news for a few days …now it’s time to share. My fall racing season is not going to happen as I’m headed for surgery next Tuesday.

Remember how I thought it would be a simple fix to treat my iron deficiency brought on by crazy irregular and heavy periods with some supplements and rest and be on my way? Wellย after still feeling crappy, still no running and more tests, it seems the source of my problem are fibroids. ย I’ve had them since my early thirties (or at least that was the first time they were detected) and, like many women who have them, I wouldn’t have known they were there if someone didn’t tell me. But now those little buggers have turned into trouble-makers and really must vacate the premises.

So I sat in my doctor’s office the other day and tried to hold it together as I listened to my doctor walk me through everything…and I’ve got to be honest one of my first thoughts was “But what about my race in Philly? I was suppose to go to Vegas! What do you mean surgery…recovery…which means no running?!” Perhaps not rational, but it is where I went first.

So the simple fix just got a little more complicated. But there is a light at the end of this tunnel – the tunnel’s just a little longer than I had hoped. How quickly I recover is really up to me – the key is to get moving quickly, build on it every day, and be smart enough to know when to rest. I had lunch with a good friend who’s already been through this and she was really encouraging about how much better I’ll feel once I’m on the other side of this. Light at the end of the tunnel, right?

  1. Sorry to hear this Michelle! On the bright side, you got a concrete answer and you’re moving toward a permanent fix. I’ve been there. I was not a runner then so the surgery didn’t conflict with that. I hope they’ll be able to remove them laparoscopically? The other way is a total bear. You’re strong and you’ll rock recovery either way. Bummed I won’t see you in Vegas!!!

    • Thanks Marcia! You are so right that having a permanent fix will be such a good thing! I’m so bummed about missing Vegas – we’ll just have to find another race to connect in 2016 ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Ugh. So, I am sorry to hear that your tunnel got longer (love that analogy!) but it also sounds like the light at the end really could be brighter with a solid diagnosis and fix. It is important to get moving after surgery, but it also is essential to take it slowly and rest. ((hugs))

  3. How frustrating. But take the time you need to heal your body and rest, and no doubt you’ll come back stronger and better than before!

  5. Aw–I’m sorry! I think this is fairly common among women our age and the bright side is that you will get relief from some yucky symptoms, right? Good luck on Tuesday and here’s to speedy healing up!

  6. I had a hysterectomy (kept my ovaries) about 6 years ago for a huge fibroid and let me tell you that it was the best thing I’ve ever done! Once I recovered, I was running and faster than ever. I hope you have good results…

  10. I’m so sorry to hear this Michelle ๐Ÿ™ I know exactly what you mean about questioning athletic pursuits in the face of injuries or set backs. The other week my doctor started off saying “I know this isn’t what you want to hear about exercise, but…” She knows me well.

I’m glad that you found an answer though and I hope recovery goes smoothly and quickly for you!!!
