Five Things Over October Coffee

Happy October!

I’m enjoying a few days off to make this an extra long weekend! And, of course, a long weekend is a great time to catch up over coffee with friends – so for this week’s Fit Five Friday, I’m joining Coco and Deborah for the Ultimate Coffee Date. Grab your favorite beverage and let’s chat.

Five Things Over October Coffee

Over coffee, I would tell you that I have a huge hole in my backyard and I couldn’t be happier! Yes, the long-awaited remodel is officially underway.

Over coffee, I would also tell you that after agonizing over so many options and staring at more slabs than I’d care to count, my hubs and I finally settled on the choice for our kitchen countertop! So aside from knobs and drawer pulls, all the major kitchen selections are done. On to the bathrooms lol!

Over coffee, I would tell you that the TC 10M that I was supposed to run last weekend ended up being canceled! I runfessed last week that while I wasn’t happy to be out due to injury, I was not sorry to be missing the heat advisory announced in a pre-race email. Well, it turns out things went from red flag to black flag, and both the 10M and marathon were canceled. I feel so bad for the runners but also for the race organizers – social media has not been kind!

Over coffee, I would tell you that once again I’m on the hunt for a dress for my organization’s big fundraising gala. I’ve got just over a month until the event and no time to hit the stores so it looks like I’ll be doing a lot of online ordering and returning.

Over coffee, I would tell you that I’ve decided to spread some of my vacation time out to create multiple long weekends for myself and it’s been a game-changer – Sundays hit differently when you have a Monday off.

What would you tell me over coffee?

  1. That was a bummer on the Twin Cities ordeal! Did they offer the option to defer your registration to next year? I saw a lot of other fall marathons were trying to accommodate the chaos (the IMT Des Moines Marathon’s site crashed from all the influx of registrations that morning). That is quite a hole in your backyard!

  2. OK, that hole suggests you are doing a lot more than a kitchen remodel — is that for an addition? A new deck? Nosy friends want to know!

It would be so disappointing to have a marathon canceled, but people need to get over themselves. The organizers didn’t make the decision lightly.

We don’t even have Monday as a holiday!

    • Ha ha yes more than just the kitchen! We’re doing an addition that will include a new family room and screened in porch, plus a master suite on the 2nd floor. 🙂

  3. As someone who completed a dangerously hot marathon where 300+ people were taken by ambulance to the hospital and someone died on the course, I can tell you they made the right decision. People need to get some perspective.
All the best with that HUUUGE remodel! So exciting! Enjoy your time off! I just went to a very fancy event-filled weekend with 4 events in 3 days and it was my goal to procure dress(es) online. I ended up pulling out some old stuff and making do, and now in hindsight I’m glad I didn’t buy more stuff I’ll never wear again.

    • I agree on folks needing to have some perspective. I don’t envy the race organizers!

It’s funny I have a sneaking suspicion I may end up pulling something from my closet for the event. I ordered some things but I’m not feeling terribly inspired.

Remodeling is stressful. Sounds like things are going well. I want a new deck. Hope that’s next. Or a pool?

I thought of you. Glad you didn’t travel there and not race.

The weather this year has been insane.

  5. Good luck with the renos!

I personally think RDs go forward with races when they really shouldn’t, so kudos to them — as hard as it is for the runners. Life has a way of working out, right?

Glad you’re enjoying those long weekeds!

    • I think you’re right about the RDs – so much pressure on them…and the money. Being a race organizer is not for the faint of heart – especially with the way the weather has been in recent years!

  6. Monday’s a holiday? I never know what’s going on. i always work on Mondays (unless it’s Christmas Day or New Year’s Day) and as far as I know the kids aren’t off of school (hmm, maybe I’d better check that!)
That’s such a bummer about the race being canceled… for everyone but you, ha ha. I mean I’m sure you feel bad for the other runners, but I guess it all worked out.
I can’t wait to see what the hole in your backyard turns into!

    • Monday seems to be one of those holidays a lot of people don’t have off eventhough it’s a Federal holiday. My office seems to close for everything and I’m not complaining lol.

  7. How exciting that you’ve started your home addition! I hope you’ll share pictures when it’s finished!

I had not heard about the Twin Cities races being cancelled until I read your and Marcia’s posts. That’s got to be an agonizing decision to make for the race director.

  8. Your home remodel sounds very exciting! I just went through the dress search for an event for my husband in 2 weeks. I ordered and returned a ridiculous amount of dresses, Let me know if you need a consult!

  9. Yayyy! Best of luck for the remodel! Yay for having most of the selections done too!

Good luck with finding a dress! :]

  10. Have you tried Rent The Runway? I’ve had several great experiences with them and the dresses have been fabulous.

So excited to see how your remodel goes!

    • A couple of the women in my office were just talking about Rent the Runway and swear by it. I just ordered a bunch of dresses so we’ll see how that goes.

  11. I understand the anger/frustration of the runners but I am sure canceling the race was the best decision. I ran the 2007 Chicago Marathon where it was dangerously HOT and it was cancelled midway through the race. I am also excited about your renovations! Cannot wait to see the final product. You will share them with us, right? 🙂
