Winter’s Making a Comeback

After an amazing stretch of mild weather for February, we came crashing back to reality this week as Old Man Winter made it clear he was not ready to leave the party. Icy conditions and a sub-zero wind chill meant spending some quality time with my treadmill. Here’s a peek at how the week played out.

Winter’s Making a Comeback

Monday — 2.5 miles & Core. While I don’t usually run back-to-back days, I wanted to shift to my new workout schedule so a Monday run was needed. I had the day off for Presidents’ Day and it was 50 degrees so it really wasn’t too hard to get out the door for a short loop.
Tuesday — Rest day
Wednesday — Upper Body Strength, Core & Hip mobility. This class was recommended in one of the Peloton Facebook groups, and it’s become an instant favorite!

Thursday — 3.5 miles, Core & Hip mobility. An ice/snow mix hit early in the morning so this was a treadmill run.
Friday — Peloton bike, Core, & Lower Body Strength
Saturday — 6 miles. My longest run of 2023…and on the mill no less! Temps in the teens before factoring in the wind chill made running outdoors a hard “No” for me. I’m not going to lie – this many miles on the mill for me was not easy.
Sunday — On the plan: Peloton Bike & Yoga. I keep saying I need to get to my yoga mat…today’s the day!

The highlight of the week was hitting my February goal of returning to a 6-mile “long run”. The slow and steady mileage build seems to be paying off and I’m excited to see what March will bring. The forecast for the week ahead is filled with snow and freezing temps – I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I can get outside for next week’s long run.

Same weather here… cold and snow.

For once it didn’t affect me… but I do feel sorry for those runners who have a race soon.

I hate the treadmill. I don’t own one.. I’ve always been able to somehow get outside and find a safe place to run.

  2. Yay for the 6 mile run! I’ve been seizing the day with outdoor runs when the weather was unseasonably warm, but hitting the tread for 45 min training runs. 6 on the tread is serious commitment!

    Glad it felt good!

  3. I’m glad you reached your February running goal- but sorry it had to be on the treadmill. Nice job on getting it done. I actually don’t mind the treadmill- but I don’t use it much. I don’t have one, I just use it at the gym if I absolutely need to. That hasn’t happened in a long time though!
I hope you have a break in the weather this week for that long run.

  4. After an amazing tease at spring on Thursday, it snowed yesterday (but didn’t stick). I’m so ready for spring!

I’m not a fan of the treadmill, but always grateful to have one when I need it – like this morning when I wanted to force myself to walk slower so I set it at 3.0.

  5. Well, you know how I feel about treadmill running, so I won’t need to elaborate. I can’t remember if a 10K was my distance PR or if I did a 7-miler last year (???), but anything beyond 30 minutes is a major struggle for me. Kudos to you for getting those six miles done! We have a week of rain in the forecast here….

  6. Yay way to hit your goal of building back up to 6 miles. You were smart to take it slow and easy. I also really like that hip class. They just feel good! Have a great week ahead

  7. Six miles on the treadmill is impressive! It’s turned cold again here, just when I’m home alone as my husband has gone to the US with work. I’m not running at the moment (hamstring problems being treated; not running dropped my immunity and I got a bad virus) but it’s lovely to see what everyone is up to now I’m feeling a bit better.

  8. I can feel your pain about winter’s comeback, Michelle. It’s great that you’re keeping up with your workout routine, even with icy conditions and sub-zero wind chill. Congratulations on hitting your February goal of a 6-mile “long run” and good luck with your upcoming workouts, whether it’s on the treadmill or outdoors. Stay warm and safe!

  9. Today is absolutely beautiful and a perfect day for running. It’s nice because you know what we’ve been dealing with! Hopefully, this lovely weather is coming your way. Glad you got that 6 miler in but too bad it’s on the mill! You are getting it done!

  10. It’s been forever since I’ve had to do a long run on the mill, so kudos to you! You know our weather was pretty much the same — 2 miles is a lot easier to handle. I’m hoping I’ll get outside this week on Wednesday but we might still be shoveling out, LOL!

I’m doing the slow & steady thing too.

  11. Way to get 6 on the mill. That is not easy! After a rainy Monday tomorrow, we’re supposed to be pretty mild for the week ahead. After this past week, I feel like we’ve earned it!

  12. That’s wonderful that you hit your long run goal. What you say about slow and steady mileage build-up sounds hopeful for someone like myself. Well done doing the long run on the treadmill. I really dislike those things and even if I had space for one, I wouldn’t get one. If I can’t run, I use the rowing machine for cardio.
We returned to colder weather here too but not as bad as where you are, thank goodness!
I hope March will be a great month with many good runs for you.

    • Thanks Susanne – as hard as it is to be patient, I’ve promised myself to not rush the miles and risk more injury. I hope March is good to all of us! 🙂

  13. Treadmills are the worst!

It’s absolutely not winter here and I want it back. Badly.

I am also back to almost regular 6 milers and I am here for it!
