End of Summer Runfessions

Today is college move-in day for my oldest son!

By the time this post goes live, I will be knee-deep in lugging boxes and bags into his dorm. I cannot believe the summer has passed so quickly and here we are on the last Friday of August!

Marcia has opened the Runfessional and the Fit Five Friday crew is ready to go…so let’s get started, shall we?

End of Summer Runfessions

Referral bureaucracy — I runfess that I am completely frustrated with the new practice my doctor recently joined. The referral process to get in to see the sports orthopedic has been a complete cluster. After much back and forth, and jumping through several bureaucratic hoops, I finally have an appointment on 9/1.

Stressed —Between the countdown to college, trying to make time to explore some new career options, and life in general, I runfess that I’m feeling just a tad stressed out.

Mileage? What mileage? — With the combination of the soul-sucking humidity that has been ever-present these last few weeks (er… whole summer?!) and the mini run-break for my hip, I runfess that I am not where I wanted to be in terms of a solid base on which to start my half marathon training. Sigh…it is what it is. My half isn’t until mid-November so there’s time to pull together a decent training plan. Of course, I’ll also have to wait and see what the orthopedist has to say.

Scaling back — But, on a similar note, I runfess that the virtual 15K I’m planning to run next month as part of the Back on My Feet Summer Running Festival will most likely become a 10K instead.

Slightly obsessed — I have been looking for some easy ways to help boost my protein intake and I runfess that I have become slightly obsessed with Quest Chile Lime Protein Chips. These satisfy my salty/crunch craving while delivering 20g of protein.

  1. I got to agree the humidity this summer has been a bear! I can tolerate it, but that doesn’t mean I have to love it LOL The same goes for the ever-present wind. I hope the college move-in goes well for you!

  2. I agree. This weather sucks.

You have plenty of time to train for November.

Good luck with college move in.

    Those chips. Love that flavor.

  3. I feel you from the other side of that referral mess–I work for a large medical group–the biggest in Illinois and Wisconsin–and it can be a challenge to get my patients in to see the specialists I want for them! PPO is the way to go, IMHO. Looking forward to hearing what you find out from the sports med specialist!

  4. Oh, wow on the college move-in! I hope it goes well — with not too much snubbing by him and sobbing by you. 😉

I’m in the same boat with mileage and in worse shape with my Achilles. I am vascillating between fatalism and frustration.

New career move? That’s exciting as well as stressful, but I’m sure you’ll end up in a good place.

  5. The referral mess is a well a mess. We joined a concierge practice to avoid all of that and so far very happy. Happy college move in day! It’s fantastic and emotional at the same time. Good luck! PS also obsessed w Quest chips really helps me get that extra 20 g of protein at lunch!

  6. Good luck today!!! It’s a fun, exciting and sad experience. I hope you’re feeling okay- i was sad for about a week after my son left, but I’m just now feeling better.
Yes- a lot of people are feeling stressed right now. It’s just a crazy time. I think it’s a good call to scale back your race to a 10k.
I’m going to look into those chips- I’m really into crunchy salty things, and getting in a little protein would justify that snacking, ha ha.

    • I agree it really does feel like a stressful time for a lot of people. Hopefully, things will calm down for all of us soon! It’s good to hear that you’ve adjusted to your son being away – I’m not there yet, but it hasn’t even been a week yet.

  7. I can certainly relate to you when it comes to feeling stress. Hopefully things will calm down soon! My mileage has dropped significantly since I’m dealing with my knee and I just hope to safely finish my half marathon in mid-October!

  8. Good luck with the move in!

I brought running stuff with me but it was so hot & humid, the road near our friend’s house wasn’t really conducive to running . . . so I didn’t. But no races.

You should really have no problem running a half by November!

Good luck on new career options. That’s all very stressful too but can be rewarding!

  9. I have PPO and have never had an issue with seeing any doctor. I wished it were easy for everyone. OMG, those chips! Earlier today I was thinking of ideas of what to take for lunch and decided on sandwiches and chips. But which chips? Now I have an answer.

  10. Those chips look good!

I hope move-in day went well and that your son has a great year at college!

I’m sorry you’re stressed. Those things would be tough to manage in a good year, let alone in a pandemic year. We are always here for support.

  11. omg that baby Yoda meme. So true. Hugs my friend. Good luck with all the things

  12. I’m so sorry things have been so stressful lately. I hope the big college drop off went well. I did not know Quest made chips! Nice!
