Looking for calm in the chaos

This week was a roller coaster for sure! Work has been super hectic and really will be for the rest of this month. Add in our washing machine checking out on us and sleep being super evasive, and yeah…this week was about finding calm in the chaos.

In addition to the Family Plank Challenge, here’s a quick rundown on this week’s workouts…

Monday — Rest Day
Tuesday — Strength training
Wednesday — 1-hour physical therapy session. I swear these sessions get more and more challenging!
Thursday — Virtual 5K for the Un-canceled Project plus a 5-mile walk with a friend. This was definitely the highlight workout day of the week. I had gone out not expecting too much from this run, but my legs felt really good, so I decided to push the pace and see what happened. I was rewarded with negative splits! Best of all my legs & hip felt good the rest of the day so I met a friend for a social distance walk after work and we logged another 5 miles. It was so good to see her and catch up!

Friday — PT exercises and core work
Saturday — 3-mile run followed by a couple of hours of hauling mulch around our yard.
Sunday — PT exercises, a 2-mile walk, and 20 minutes restorative yoga via Peloton.

The lack of quality sleep really did a number on my run motivation, but overall I’m glad I stuck with my workouts despite the chaotic week.

More new kicks!

My Mother’s Day gift arrived on Friday! My boys had spied me drooling over these limited edition Adrenalines and ordered them for me! I took my first run in them on Saturday and love the way they feel…to me these GTS 20s are an improvement over the 19s, and I think they will complement the new Ghosts I picked up a couple of weeks ago nicely!

How was your week? Do you rotate your running shoes between models or wear just one style?

I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. I love those shoes! Your guys picked out the best gift. I’m sure you needed that yoga after moving all that mulch. Phew!

    • It’s crazy how much mulch we still have piled in our driveway after all the work we did. I think my husband may have over-ordered ;0

  2. Nice work on the Un-Cancelled Project 5k!
I hope you will get some better sleep this week. It’s definitely harder to run with a sleep deficit!

  3. I love your fun new shoes! What a great gift and I’m glad they feel good too! Sleep is mostly elusive for me too lately. It’s frustrating.

  4. I had a really tough week last week, and you’re right that if the sleep isn’t there the workout is going to suffer. I really want to check out the Ghost and Glycerin, our local running store just reopened and they didn’t have my size but they’re on order and I can’t wait to try them on. Right now I only have Launch but I’ve heard that it’s good to mix up your shoes and I’m hearing so many good things about both shoes.

    • I loved last year’s model of the Glycerin – this year’s felt a little squishy. I’ll be curious to hear what you think. I really like the Ghost – I think it will be my short distance shoe and save the Adrenaline for long runs.

  5. Love the new shoes! Great gift indeed. Wishing you many happy miles. PT does get hard quickly. Glad it ‘s helping. Have a fantastic week ahead

  6. I really love those sneakers! I can’t justify buying a new pair of sneakers right now since I still have 2 pairs of new sneakers in my closest 🙁 I have a pair of the 19s and they are okay, but i think the 18s were better.

Sorry to hear about how busy work will be for you this month. Hopefully the rest of the month will fly by for you. I hope that you’re able to get more sleep this week. I know how much that can really mess up workouts 🙁

    • You’re smart to stock up on a model you like – I should have done that with the 18s. The 19s and I were not friends so I’m psyched the 20s feel so good.

My big work projects will be done June 1 – I’ve just got to hold on for another couple of weeks.

  7. Those new shoes are the bomb! Have you ever tried the Ravennas? They recommended them for me (as an alternate to the Adrenalines) when I was fitted by a Brooks rep at the Route 66 expo. They’re not as supportive (but darn close) and a little lighter. I wouldn’t wear them for a long run, but anything under five miles, they’ve been a great shoe in the rotation.

  8. Good work. I hear you on the sleep though. Weren’t we going to work on our sleep before all this hit? I am in one pair only at the moment as I thought they would be my lockdown shoes and then I could throw them out, however I’m lots of miles in so might have to dig out my last new pair. Not sure what to do then as I have bought all the particular two styles of Sauconys that I like in my size on the cheap sites; normally I’d go to the running shop to check out what the new ones feel like, but …

    • Ha you’re so right Liz we were going to try to work on the sleep thing! I’m sure this whole COVID situation isn’t helping either of us in the sleep department.

Shoe shopping is challenging right now – I purposefully ordered from places that will let you test run for 90 days and still return. I figured that was the next best thing since I couldn’t go into a store to try them on.

  9. Love the new brooks!! I’ve been struggling with sleep as well… I wake up around 3AM every day and can’t really fall back asleep. I guess the pandemic is affecting even our sleep patterns 🙁

  10. I’ll be interested to hear how the washing machine installation goes. Ours is 15 years old. Usually we like to try to replace it before it’s likely to die . . . but not right now, not if we don’t have to. Good luck with it!

That’s great that your hip stood up to all that activity. Run Happy on anything running is always good. 🙂

    • It’s funny Judy our washer just hit 15 years – we had planned to buy a new one and then Covid. Fingers-crossed on the delivery – they come tomorrow!

  11. Great week. I love those shoes. I really wanted to get them, but I think I want to go for a fitting first, just to make sure the Adrenaline is where I need to be. I just have to get myself in to the store. Easier said than done, for sure.

Good sleep is so necessary. I’m not sleeping well at all because of the puppy (and the guys are NOT helping AT ALL), and it does take a toll on my activity level and motivation. She s sleeping through the night, but she is up at 5/5:30 and wants to eat and play, and I try to keep her up late so she sleeps through the night.

    • Having a puppy in many ways is like having a newborn 🙂

With the injury and your comeback, I think you’re smart to hold off on new shoes until you can get a fitting.

  12. Great week of workouts/runs! Love your new sneakers. I wear the same brand, just different model number each year – I buy last years model for this year. … but with Covid I’m not sure if I’ll get to my favourite store.

  13. Hooray for no hip pain.

Our washing machine just got fixed. I was thinking it would need to be replaced.

Those are very cool shoes. Glad they feel good too.

  14. Love the new shoes! I wear Brooks too and have a few different models that I rotate between. I hope this week is a little calmer for you!

  15. Great job on that negative split run! That’s always a great feeling. Omg those shoes are amazing! I recently got new Brooks but the Ghost 12’s aren’t working as well for me as the 11’s did…

My life is all about broken/awkward sleep lol!

    • Thanks Janelle!

Isn’t it crazy how much things can change between one year to the next for shoes? I recently got the Ghost 12s and like them, but I don’t think I’ll be able to run longer distances in them…not enough cushion.

  16. Way to go on those negative splits on the 5K! That is awesome! Love the new kicks. I do rotate my running shoes.

  17. I used to buy just one model, but I’m all about variety now. I’m all about finding my next shoe love. When I went to our local running store yesterday to get a pair of Ghosts for my son, all of the displays said “Don’t touch the shoes”. UGHHHHHH! Torture.

  18. Those are awesome shoes! You know I love my Brooks shoes. I used to rotate them but now I just wear one pair for all of my shoes. I have a few pair of Ghosts and cannot wait to use them. I am also struggling with sleep. I am getting up later than usual which is weird since I am not working as hard as I did before. Who knows.

    • I switched back to Brooks shoes a couple of years ago and just love them!

Sorry, you’re also struggling with sleep…a sign of the times? Hmmm…

  19. I’m glad you were able to get some much needed (yet safe) social time with your friend. The shoes are cute!

  20. Loving the shoes 🙂 I must admit, I’m a one pair at a time kinda guy. Currently I’m in a pair of New Balance with two more new pairs lined up ready for when I need them.

  21. love the blog

  22. Loved your post and your new kicks !

  23. Lovely shoes! Keep rocking!!!

  24. Nice shoes ! You’re an example of motivation
