Trying to Embrace the Heat

Coming off of last weekend’s 10K, I felt like I needed to back off just a bit to give my cranky hip & hammy a break, and Mother Nature quickly obliged by sending the temps and humidity sky high. Nonetheless, I did get some decent workouts in!

Monday –  Kickboxing class
Tuesday –  Still feeling the effects of Monday’s class I took a pass on my morning run but enjoyed a great 4-mile walk with my friend E. I also got a much-needed massage!
Wednesday – 3 miles on a somewhat cool-ish morning

Thursday – Rest day
Friday – Yoga
Saturday – 5.5-mile slog-fest followed by 4 hours or so working on our new patio project
Sunday – More hours baking in the heat working on the patio – Yeah starting a landscaping project given the weather forecast may not have been our smartest move, but when I’m enjoying a cocktail on it one evening soon it will be worth it!

I have learned to master the front loader!

This week also wrapped up the strong Abs & Arms Challenge hosted by Rachel. I really liked the timed vs. set number of reps approach and definitely felt like my arms especially benefitted.

It looks like the heatwave we’re in will continue until at least Friday, so there doesn’t seem to be much choice except to get out as early in the morning as possible and embrace it. As I was slogging through my run on Saturday, I started playing this mental game of trying to list off things I was grateful for instead of listening to the whining in my head. As I made a list in my head the one I kept coming back to was “I’m grateful I can choose to do this.” Yes it was miserable out and yes I was moving ridiculously slow, but given the alternative of not being able to run at all, I’d take it every time. I’m going to try to hold on to that thought this week!

I’m joining Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.

How are you holding up in this heat?

  1. I give you major kudos for starting a landscaping project this weekend in the heatwave! You’re so right that it will all be worth it when it’s done 🙂

I like your outlook that you had on Saturday’s run. “I’m grateful I can choose to do this” is a mantra I need to adopt once I am able to start running again. I am such a big baby when it comes to running in the heat and I complain way too much!

  2. I think you win the prize of doing projects in the heat!! our project was indoors and it was hot (and there was paint involved) but there was a good breeze coming through the window at least keeping us slightly cool… anyway, when you have a goal in mind that involves cocktails, I say go for it 🙂

I don’t envy the heat you guys have. it’s warm here but for me still bearable!

  3. Our heat wave will continue until Thurs I think. I don’t know if I can bear to run outdoors until then. I don’t own a tm.

Outdoor gardening in this weather. Kudos to you. I barely water my plants. lol

  5. Our heat hasn’t been too terrible this year. And we don’t have much humidity where I live so that helps too.

Great job with listening to your body this week

  7. Thats a great idea to focus on gratitude while running in the heat! I try to remind myself of how happy I am to be running, even when the conditions are tough.

  8. Your “grateful” approach to that hot run is a great idea. Woah on the front loader – that must be a serious project!!

  9. Look at you driving the heavy equipment. I bet it was fun! 😉 Make sure to post a pic of the finished project! I’m going to try your gratitude trick on my next long run. Thanks for linking!

  10. As I said on your Instagram post…”YES! we get to choose to run!” When I was sidelined last summer, that’s all I could think of when I saw post after post of people complaining about running in the heat. I would have gladly traded places with all of them 😉 And that frontloader…I’d be crashing through our back wall if I was in the driver’s seat LOL

  11. You look like a pro on that front loader!!! Growing up, we lived in the country and did a lot of yard work using tractors and stuff. Altho put me behind a push lawnmower and watch me tear up the yard…

I know I should be grateful that I can run…even in the heat…but it’s tough. I think it’s ok to admit that it’s hard. Hang in there!

  12. Sounds like you’re putting a lot of work into the patio, I’m sure it will pay off when it’s ready for you to be out there with a drink 🙂 Great philosophy on listing things to be grateful for!

  13. Look at you on the front loader! Awesome!

Sorry you felt the need to back off the miles a little, but glad you enjoyed the arm and an challenge!

  14. It’s hot and humid here in NC. I don’t do well in the heat. I find that I really need to get out there around sunrise, or take it indoors. Happy 4th!

  15. I’ll take a 3 mile walk with a friend and a massage over a 4 mile run any day! The heat will not let up here in the Chicago area. And the humidity…ugh!

  16. Kudos to you for braving the heat with your project. This heat is no joke and I think we’ve all earned a break from it.

  17. It isn’t always easy finding a good in a run when the conditions are miserable, so good job! I guess I had the right mindset yesterday or just the fact that I was with friends. There wasn’t *too* much whining. 🙂

There is just no way I’d be doing outside work right now — but just think of all that heat acclimation!
