Weekly Wrap – 6 weeks to Wicked

I hate to sound like a broken record but I really do feel like these weeks are just flying by! Anyone else feeling that way?

There are just 6 weeks to my next race, the Wicked Half Marathon.

Actually, thanks to the nagging hip/glute/piriformis thing, Wicked will be my first race of 2017. Gotta say that I’m glad I don’t have any big goals for this race, other than to finish upright and have fun, cause I feel like my training mojo comes and goes. While in the past two weeks I’ve been motivated to hit the track for speedwork and even worked in hill repeats…err this week…not so much. Here quickly is how the week shook out:

Monday – Since of late I’ve been running long on Sundays, Mondays are a total rest day.

Tuesday – A back-to-basics strength workout filled with lots of lunges, squats, and bridges in addition to the daily planks.

Wednesday – I enjoyed a break in the temps and got out an early for 4 miles.

Thursday – After a crazy hectic day, I got some much needed yoga in.

Friday – Kicked off my birthday with some miles with my husband – gotta run on your birthday right?!

Saturday – Yard work, planting, and cleaning counted as my cross-training.

Sunday – I have been battling poor quality sleep all week and when the alarm went off for this morning’s run it had all caught up with me. I was wiped out! I tried playing the re-set the alarm game, hoping an extra half hour…then hour would make a difference, but it wasn’t getting any better. So I decided to skip the run and give my body what it needed – sleep!

Hopefully I will not regret skipping today’s 8 miles. I’m not sure why my sleep has been so bad this week – I’ve been trying to get to bed at a reasonable hour, and falling a sleep hasn’t been the problem – staying asleep is another story! Fingers-crossed this week will be better.

How do you overcome bouts of bad sleep?

I’m joining in with HohoTricia, and guest host Heather for the Weekly Wrap. Be sure to stop by and check out what they’ve been up to!

  1. I have not been sleeping well the past few weeks either. I think you made the right decision to get some extra rest and start the week fresh tomorrow. Have a good one!

  2. Loving your back to basics workout on Tuesday. I feel like I need to do a workout like that at least once a week!

Smart to give your body rest – it seems like it was screaming for some extra sleep today! I hope that your sleep is better this week!

I hope that you had an awesome birthday!! 🙂

  3. I struggled with not getting quality sleep for a few weeks when I was transitioning to a new job and spending late nights working on my blog. Eventually I learned that I had to turn the computer off and put some things on hold to prioritize my sleep because that is the only way I’m going to make it through my training cycle. Also, lavender essential oils help me to fall asleep at night! I hope you find something that works for you!

  4. Something is up with my sleep as well. I think I have been getting adequate sleep (more than I usually get anyways), but I have been so tired in the afternoons. I don’t typically take naps, but I have been nodding off for 10 minutes here and there (???)

  5. I have trouble sleeping in. No matter how late I go to bed (which is usually not late) I am awake no later than 6AM. I can try all I want to go back to sleep, it just won’t happen.

I hope your sleeping gets better!

  6. Sleep is an important piece of the training puzzle – I’m sure you made the right decision. I’ve gone through stages of middle-of-the-night waking — usually when I’m stressed over something. I hope this week is better.

  7. I have no problem sleeping at night yet some days I am still tired during the day.
6 weeks till wicked, wow! I would have thought that would be an October race!

  8. Happy birthday! Definitely gotta run on your birthday. 🙂 Mine is this coming Thursday. I’m planning on running 4.0 miles for my 40th birthday and then head to the pool where we rented a cabana. Gotta love Vegas. 🙂

I hope your sleep gets better this week, but you were probably smart to skip your run and get the sleep that your body needed.

  9. Happy Birthday! It’s great to celebrate one with a run! Sleep — always difficult for me. I can go there easily, but just can’t stay asleep. I wish I had the magic answer. Yard work is serious cross training!

  10. Nice job this week! I think resting on Sunday was the right move, even though it can be frustrating to miss a run! Totally agreed that the summer has been flying by, and happy birthday!

  11. The fact that races with Halloween type names are sneaking up kind of freaks me out. Before we know it Christmas will be here. Sorry your sleep hasn’t been the best. When I dont sleep well it’s usually because I’m hot. Old lady problems ;p

  12. Happy Birthday and way to get those birthday miles in! Sometimes you have to listen to your body and hope that it works out! And it will work out how it is supposed to. I go through spurts of weird sleeping – a few weeks ago, I started the habit of not turning on my bedside lamp, so when the daylight was gone and I couldn’t see, it was time to go to bed (I called it going to bed with the sun). It actually worked for a little while, but then my schedule got messed up and I’ve had a hard time getting back to the habit. I gotta keep trying though! Thanks for linking up!

  13. Happy belated birthday Michelle! Gotta love birthday miles, especially with the hubs!

Sleep???? Oh yeah …I’ve had sleep problems for a couple of years now. Like you, never a problem falling asleep …but staying that way would be another story. But mine were definitely related to transitioning into menopause and post menopause. Thankfully, a little hormones therapy was given to me and I’m back to sleeping through the night again!

    Have a great week!

  15. Happy belated birthday! I hate sleep issues, hopefully it’s better soon. I’ve been dealing with a bit of that too and I’ve been meditating before bed and making sure not to take any electronics to bed. I definitely think that’s helping.

  16. The wicked half??? OMG Michelle, why do I so like this??? I’m a sucker for a Halloween themed run!
My birthday was on a Friday too this year! I love a Friday birthday, but I didn’t run on mine, I should have!
If there is one thing you can’t do without it’s good sleep! Honestly, how I deal with it is down some Benedryl. That stuff knocks me out!

    • Too funny about the Benedryl – I give it to my youngest son when his allergies won’t let him sleep. I hadn’t thought about taking some myself 🙂
