Runfession #1 — I continue to enjoy my strength workouts and time in the gym far more than my runs and that’s fine with me. I know that my body needs to get stronger before I start really piling on the miles.

Runfession #2 —  Given that my weekly mileage is still on the lower side, I’m seriously leaning towards dropping down from the half to the 5-miler for the upcoming Run to Remember. I know what being in half marathon shape feels like and I’m not there yet…but I will be.

Runfession #3 — While I know the strength training is going to pay off, I’m still feeling very restless about my running – like it’s time to do something different…maybe try a new way to train. Do you ever feel that way? I just listened to the Another Mother Runner podcast on heart rate training and I’ll admit I’m a little intrigued.

Runfession #4 — Actually I guess this one is more of a gym-fession…I dealing with a eavesdropper at the gym. There is this woman who always happens to be in the same section of the gym as my trainer and I and I swear she spends the whole time listening in on the instructions from the trainer instead of working out.  I watched her do it the other day to someone else who was also working out with a trainer. I feel like if she’s going to listen in that closely, perhaps she ought to chip in for the cost of the session, don’t ya think?

Eavesdropping

Runfession #5 — And speaking of gym crazies, last month I mentioned the guy who’s been coming to the gym and working out in jeans. I hadn’t seen him in weeks, but and behold he showed up the other day…and yes in jeans again. I confess it took all of my self control to not ask him about the jeans!

OK so now it’s your turn….what do you run-fess?  Ever deal with a gym eavesdropper?

  1. Oh I would be so annoyed about the eavesdropper! Get your own trainer, lol!! We have a guy that uses the equipment near us during our weight training group class, but he does his own thing and is pretty cool.

  2. Working out in jeans has GOT to be uncomfortable. Maybe there is an interest story there. Your eavesdropper should pay her share. Is your trainer aware of what’s going on? I pay more attention to my HR, especially on my long runs. It’s hard to keep it where it should be for those runs!

  3. The eavesdropping situation is SO weird not to mention rude. I’ve noticed eavesdroppers when we’re on vacay on a tour some people just horn in. We had one in Paris who joined our tour group and had the nerve to try to get into the Eiffel Tower elevator with us without a ticket. Oy. Thanks for linking!

  4. Listen to your body… If you’re thinking of switching to the 5 mile your brain is probably correct! You won’t regret it. Go smash that one instead! I’m also loving strength training as well! I’ve been trying to incorporate more info my weekly routine!

    • Thanks Gina – I do feel like if I stick with the half I might make it but will regret in the long term. Good for you for getting in more strength training!

  5. It sounds like we are on the same page with wanting to mix things up. I think switching to the 5M (?) is a great idea. A Half is A LONG way to go if you aren’t feeling ready for it!

    • Yeah that’s exactly what I keep thinking. I haven’t raced in a long time and want to enjoy it, not suffer through it. And I’ve got plenty of halfs lined up for the fall.

  6. There are some folks at my gym who workout in khakis. But they are an older group so perhaps they get a “pass”….lol

  7. Eavesdropper totally annoy me! There’s a gal at work who kind of hibernates in her “cubby” space. She’s not much of a face-to-face conversationalist…but if someone is nearby chatting, she almost always chimes in with a random contribution to the conversation. Awkward! I’m embarking on my second ultra in four months…and a bunch of us are doing “timed” runs instead of a given distance. That’s totally out of my comfort zone…but I know growth comes from change 😉

  8. Sometimes I see people running in jeans or regular shorts and I want to say something. Of course I don’t but ewwww!

And the eavesdropper? That’s just rude…

  9. Working out in jeans? How can that even work? That’s pretty absurd.

While runs may not be feeling it, at least you’re enjoying the strength training.

  10. When I used to work out at the gym with my trainer people used to come up and ask him questions right in the middle of our sessions! Sounds like a smart idea to drop down to the 5 miler if you are not feeling you are trained for the half. There is always another race to do

  11. I don’t use gyms very often, but I did while visiting my in-laws in Springfield last week. Just a two-day pass to Best Fitness (over-the-top nice people work the front desk!) No eavesdropping, but definitely a regular giving us the squinty eye. Not sure what the judgement was about, but we figured it could be 1) we brought our small bag on the floor with us (no lock for locker room) or 2) we did our workout too close to the drinking fountain (and by that a I mean about 5 feet away) or 3) he was totes jelly 😉

  12. I too would be interested in using another kind of training plan, but I also hate to change something that worked for me in the past….
That eavesdropper would drive me nuts !

  13. How tacky on the person trying to piggy back on your training!! You really should turn and ask them to pitch in if they are going to be that tacky!

There is a guy that comes to work out in Jeans at my gym too! There used to be a lady who came to zumba in jeans too! crazy! but to each their own.
