Running Pet Peeves

Erika, Patty and April are inviting us to dish on some of our running pet peeves for this week’s Tuesdays on the Run. From sidewalk hogs to clueless drivers, you know you’ve got one or two 🙂 Here are some of mine:

pet-peeves

Runners who don’t acknowledge — I get that we all have moments where we’re pushing hard and are in the zone, but really is it so hard to raise a hand, nod, etc. when another runner greets you?

Rolling through right on red — I have had one too many close calls with drivers who come rolling through a red light to make a right turn without looking.

Waiting for a satellite — I’ve mentioned more than once lately that my Forerunner 10 is bumming me out lately with it’s inability to find a satellite. It can be frustrating to be ready to run and your watch is not! (I’ve been trying to use the time productively by getting in some dynamic stretches.)

Being told by non-runners that I should stop running — After running for 5 years, I’m still amazed by the number of non-runners who are quick to tell me that running is bad for my knees, back, etc. Really? I would never imagine sharing unsolicited advice about a sport that someone is clearly passionate about, would you?

Treadmill grunting — You knew I’d include a gym crazy here 🙂 My new fave at the gym is a treadmill grunter. Again, I have much respect for putting in a hard effort, but if I can hear you over my music….

What are some of your running pet peeves?

  3. YES! I hate when people feel compelled to tell me that running is not “natural” for my body. Um, what? It’s literally the most innate exercise we perform.

  4. At one point I used to go to a gym where a man would always run on the treadmill wearing a bell around his neck. Jingle, jingle . . . I kid you not. Super strange and very annoying!

  5. You do really have to watch the cars! I do not trust them at all. Dogs on too long of leashes and their owners let them lunge at you. That annoys me!

  6. I actually have a whole dynamic stretching routine. I’m pretty religious about it, too. And with my Garmin 110 I once had to wait 15 minutes!

My Vivoactive is often extremely quick, and if it isn’t, it will pick up a satellite on the run which the 110 seemed unable to do.

Except this morning, for some reason, it decided to try to update itself and seemed to get stuck . . . still wasn’t as long a wait as the old 110.

  7. I agree w all of those. I have had other non runners say why are you running, you dont have to. I’m thinking to stay in shape, you should try it…haha. And I hate waiting on my GPS signals. Sometimes I can be a mile down the road before it gets one.

  8. I think one of my biggest is the lack of acknowledgement. I’ve done a social experiement and said hi to every runner that ran towards me and I was shocked at how few said hello!!

  9. I came this close to being hit by a car that did not stop or look right! So dangerous! I’ve got my Garmin trained to sit on the window sill and find the signal while I get my other stuff ready. It works!

  11. Waiting for a satellite, that’s a good one! What’s even more annoying is when your watch dies in the middle of a Run when you weren’t expecting it!

  12. Oh my, don’t get me started on runners who won’t acknowledge you. I’ve posted on that too many times! They can’t wave? Or just nod? What’s wrong with those people?
