Why I Meditate

From time to time, I have mentioned here and on Twitter that I meditate, and I’ve noticed that whenever I do I receive lots of inquiries about why I do it? Do I see any real benefits? Or, comments indicating that others would like to do it but don’t have the time, or have tried and failed.

Meditation

For me, meditation gives me a chance to connect with myself before the demands of the day take hold. When I meditate I’m calmer, more grounded, and as a result, more present in the moment.

Notice I said when I meditate – I’ve fallen off the mediation bandwagon on a couple of occasions, usually because I’ve gotten caught up in the whirlwind of schedules and have made the decision that “I don’t have time” or “I’ll do it later” only to never get to it. And, little by little, my meditation “practice” is more of a random occurrence and then before you know it I’m staring at the back of the meditation bandwagon as it pulls further and further away from me.

I recommitted to meditating at the beginning of December – thinking it was good timing with the holidays approaching, and for the most part I’ve been fairly consistent. I’m motivated to stay with it because I like how I feel and how I deal with things when I do. Now am I going to tell you I’m all roses and sunshine and the picture of zen? Nope – it is a work in progress, but I like the direction I’m headed.

I got an email the other day from the Chopra Center announcing another of their 21-day Meditation Challenges. The theme this time is “Perfect Health.” I’ve found these challenges to be a great launching point for starting a practice and encourage anyone who’s interested in giving meditation a try, to check this out – it starts on Monday, March 11th. (For the record I’m in no way affiliated with the Chopra Center – just a fan sharing the love 🙂 )

Do you meditate?

  1. I do.
    every single morning.
    NO MATTER WHAT.

  2. I don’t meditate. I have read about the benefits and should probably try it. It’s difficult for me to sit still and relax for any length of time. Moving seems to be more relaxing to me. I’m rambling because you’ve given me something to think about 🙂

    • Jill I’m so Type A it isn’t even funny and sitting still was really a challenge for me. The trick I found was to start small – just a couple of minutes and build from there. Guided meditations also helped me because it gave me something to focus on.

  3. I try to every day even if it’s just for a few minutes! Makes me feel so much better!

  4. I think it is awesome that you meditate. It is something I have always aspired to do, but have never taken the time. The only time I manage it is in shavasana!

  5. I love that you meditate. I’ve been doing awhile, although right now, it’s not for long. I find it so settling, if that makes any sense. Some of the guided ones I’ve done are so freaking long! Haha! Don’t I sound calm?

  6. I actually just meditated for the first time yesterday at my therapy appointment. My therapist says it’s great for anxiety relief. I’ll have to look into that 21 day challenge, thank you!

  7. I used to do meditation… but only a minute or two before and after Jiu-Jitsu class… it’s part of the ritual. I’ve often wished I was better at it, and thought about taking a class, but usually I end up using up my time in other ways.

  8. I haven’t. Maybe someday? Honestly, I think I’d either jump out of my skin or fall asleep. :-/

  9. I do not meditate, but i feel like it is something i would like to start. any suggestions on where to begin?

    • Emily I would definitely try the 21-day challenge I mentioned above – it’s a great “starter program” 🙂 Otherwise, I’d just try to set aside a few minutes every day to start and build more time from there; breathe deeply and just follow your breath.

  10. I couldn’t agree more with the positive effects of meditation, nothing like the present :]

  11. I think you may have convinced me to try meditation!! This weather doesn’t help!! Probably need to meditate more:)
Hope to see you in New Bedford!

  12. I occassionally do, it does help to relax.
I have never been able to force myself to meditate regularly.

  13. In this day and age especially everyone needs to meditate. We need to give our minds a break even if it’s just 10-15 min day!
