Listening to a Cranky ITB

This week I was dealing with an IT band that could use a bit of an attitude adjustment. A cranky ITB equals very little run  – in fact just one run, but there were still workouts to be done. Here’s a quick peek at how the week went down.

Weekly Run Down – Week 20

Monday — 20 min Low Impact Ride, 10 min Strength for Runners, 10 min Arms & Light Weights, and stretch. I have been loving the Strength for Runner classes – they’re like a good PT session, which was certainly needed this week. Kim recommended this APIHM Arms & Light Weights class – so many reps…my arms were jelly.
Tuesday — Rest day
Wednesday — 3.1- mile run. My one and only run of the week. It was a beautiful morning and the run felt pretty good. It wasn’t until later in the day that the ITB started to squawk. Grateful for my massage gun!

Thursday — 20 min Ride plus 5 min Cool Down, 15 min Strength for Runners, and stretch. I also spent some quality time with my massage therapist.
Friday — 20 min Ride, Core, and Yoga. Also more time with my massage gun. I was feeling the effects of Thursday afternoon’s massage and knew running would not be a wise choice. This ride was a nice way to get some movement in my legs without stressing the ITB.
Saturday — My oldest son’s graduation and dorm move-out! Suffice it to say, there was not much packing in advance – it was hot and there were a lot of stairs involved…I think this counts as a workout. The graduation ceremony was wonderful – still can’t believe high school is a wrap!
Sunday — 5.2-mile walk and stretch. With the combination of all the stairs and hours in the car, I woke up not feeling a run. My hubs agreed to join me for a brisk-paced walk, and a very warm and humid 5+ miles were logged.

Spotted this painted rock on our walk – just love this!

The Week Ahead – A staycation and 2nd vaccination!

I’m hoping that the extra attention paid to my IT band will pay off and I’ll be able to run more this week. I’m 6 weeks away from my first in-person race so I’d like to kick things up a bit.

I have the week off from work and I’m really looking forward to having some downtime. There will be lots of time on the deck and patio, some outdoor dining, time with family, and I’m hoping to put the finishing touches on my flower beds.

I’m also getting my second shot on Wednesday  – one more step towards normalcy.

How was your week?

  1. I’ve had my fair share of IT band issues, but generally have been able to work through them the same way you are- theragun, massage, lots of stretching, maybe a little bit more rest than usual. Good luck! I hope your second shot goes well too.

  2. Ugh, sorry to hear about your IT band. Sounds like you’re being proactive- hopefully that will pay off.
Enjoy your staycation and congrats on your second shot- getting both shots done feels amazing.

  3. Sorry to hear about the cranky ITB 🙁 I hope that nursing it this week will help it to feel better quicker. I’m still thinking about that APIHM Arms & Light Weights class. My arms were so mad at me, lol.

Congratulations to your son – Such an exciting time for all of you!

    Enjoy your staycation next week!

    • You gave fair warning on Sam’s class, but yikes!

Thanks for the good wishes – graduation day was so much fun despite all of the packing LOL

  4. Sorry about your IT band but hopefully all the massage and extra rest will help it heal quickly! Enjoy your time off this week!

  5. Sorry you ITB is flaring up! The massage gun helps for sure. Maybe a massage? Those move out days are always so much work! It will be nice to have him home though

    • I did squeeze a massage in on Thursday which helped and I’m thinking of booking another appointment.

And yes, so nice to have him home!

  6. Congratulations to your son on his graduation! You have to listen to your body. If your ITB is acting up, it’s best to take it easy. You still managed to get a lot of fitness activities in this week!

    • Thank you Laurie!

Unfortunately, I’ve been down this ITB road before and a break from running was required last time. I’m happy it doesn’t bother me when I ride!

  7. Congrats again on your son’s graduation. LOL on the lack of packing in advance. I remember the same from my son’s college move out ….

I hope your ITB settles down and that you have an easy time with your second vaccine dose. I do suggest an arms + light weights workout when you get home to help with the local soreness.

    • Thanks for the suggestion on the workout – I will remember that.

His dorm room was not to be believed but from what I could see it looked like all of the boys in his dorm had the same lack of packing skills LOL

  8. Sorry your ITB has been having attitude. Not fun! Great job with all the riding, though, and strength work. How about those steps 😉 Have you come over to the dark side, and want to do more?
Maybe we can have a FT chat this week, if you have some free time over lunch? Congrats, again, to your son!!!

    • Oh my gosh after climbing all of those stairs in his dorm I give you mad props for your stair workouts 🙂

Love the idea for a FT chat!

  9. You are wise to back off a bit and let that angry ITB have an attitude adjustment. I feel you on the dorm move out. My daughter had NOTHING ready to go when we got there either. It’s a full blown workout for sure. Congrats again to your son!

    • Thanks Marcia 🙂 And what is it about the dorm move-out?! I certainly didn’t expect him to be fully packed up, but seriously his room looked like a bomb hit it LOL

  10. I’m sorry your IT was cranky, but you certainly stayed active. And yes, moving your son out counts as a workout for sure!

Have a great staycation! I think the weather will much nicer for it this week.

  11. Congrats to your son. That is exciting.

Not happy about the ITB problems. Hope it calms down.

YAY for the vaccine…on your way to normalcy…races… vacations!!

  12. Dang it on the IT band issue! Sorry to hear that Michelle. Great that you were able to get some biking in though. Congrats to your son on his graduation!! Moving day definitely equals exercise! Enjoy your downtime!!

    • I’m so happy that the bike doesn’t seem to bother the ITB otherwise I’d probably be coming out of my skin right now. Hopefully a little more babying and it will start to cooperate.

  13. SQuawking is the perfect word to describe the IT Band. Hope you find relief. Totally agree re SfR being like a good PT session. All the single leg work especially.

  14. Oh I posted a comment and it’s vanished. I helped an ITB issue by rolling (owww) and congratulations to your son!

  15. Staycations and vaccines are where it’s at!

I love that rock you found!

  16. Sorry to hear about the ITB. Take it easy and hopefully soon it will be better. Congrats to your son! I hope you are enjoying your staycation. I am also taking a few days off from work and am going back on Tuesday.

  17. Ugh on IT band pain – hope you get it to calm down quickly. I hope your second shot went well today and that you have minimal side-effects.

Congrats to your son! What an exciting time for him!
