Five Benefits of Morning Running

Happy Friday!

If you’ve been hanging out around here then you know that one of my goals this month is to get back to early morning runs. I’m happy to say that so far I’m crushing this goal, and while I admit some mornings are harder than others, I’m loving these runs. Today’s Friday Five theme is “favorites” so I thought I’d share some benefits of why it’s worth it to get up and out early.

Workout of early

No schedule conflicts — This one is huge for me! I love being able to “check the box” off my to do list and not stress about how I’m going to fit in a run later in the day.

More time in your day — Taking care of my workout early also leaves me feeling much more in control of my day, and with more time to get things done.

Better breathing — Getting out and done before too many commuters hit the road means breathing in less car exhaust.

Metabolism jump start — With an early morning workout you kick your metabolism into high gear, burning more calories at a faster rate throughout the day.

Better sleep — Inevitably getting up earlier means going to bed earlier. As a result, I’m finding that I’ve been sleeping better and overall feel more rested.

**Bonus** — A chance to catch a beautiful sunrise!

  1. I love, love, LOVE running in the morning. It’s so peaceful and I definitely feel like there’s more “day” in my day.

Having said that, there’s something pretty awesome about running in the sunset, too. 🙂

  2. Yes x 5! I adore when I am in the habit of running first thing and come summer I have to in order to avoid the heat but right now? Ugh not so much. Glad you’re sticking with it!

  3. I love running in the morning too. 🙂 It hypes me up and makes me feel like I can do anything. Also, then I always have time for it.

  4. These are great points! I’m still doing my weekeday workouts after work and it has been tough sometimes just because I feel myself getting more and more tired through the day. I love my weekend workouts in the morning and I want to try to transition to that during the week too.

  6. I used to be a morning runner, but I just can’t manage it with commute/work start time. So… I’m an evening runner.

  7. So not an early morning runner at all! I need to eat breakfast and have a few coffees first 🙂 Good for you getting back on track!

    • I’ve been thinking of trying to slip in a little coffee before I run, but on the other hand I kinda feel like I just need to roll out of bed and go before my brain gets going 😉

  8. I admire those that get up and run/workout before work. I would never have time for that. Now in the summer time I will get up early to run but only cus I don’t have to be anywhere later. Good for you for getting up and getting it done!

  9. I run in the morning for all of these reasons. I would also add that the others in my family sleep late, so I can often go out and come back and they are not up yet… so it doesn’t affect how much we see each other.

  11. You KNOW I love sunrise runs! I’m not so good at going to bed early though. 😉 Better breathing is a good point – especially in allergy season I think the pollen count is lower earlier in the day,
