My Ode to Long Runs

(Editor’s note: This post was originally published in August 2012.)

Long Runs…

….at times, a confidence booster,
and other times…..an ego crusher

….show you how far you’ve come,
or how much farther you need to go

….a chance for mental cleansing,
or a time for “chatter brain” to be unleashed

….time to connect with running buddies,
or much needed “me” time

….done just as the sun is rising,
or chasing the sun to bed

….allow you to shed all the roles you wear in life,
except for one….runner.

Which do you prefer, short or long runs?

I’m linking up with Kim and Zenaida for Tuesday Topics.

  5. I am so a chatter brain. It does not stop the entire run!

  6. So true! Thanks for the reminder 😉

  7. Great post!! Long runs are my favorite work out! I know each of them is a challenge but I feel so much stronger each time I finish.

  8. Great post Michelle!

  9. Love it Michelle!

  10. Short and sweet but certainly speaks the truth, Michelle. Love it!

  11. Love this!

  12. This is so awesome, Michelle! Thanks for sharing it again.

  13. I agree that long runs are great for mental cleansing. There’s something about spending an hour or two out on the roads that is just awesome for clearing your mind. I am favoring short runs at the moment but that’s definitely one thing I miss about long runs!

  15. I love this! I’ve been commenting on other blogs that I prefer short runs. But this reminded me why I love long runs. I feel the most powerful on a long run! It challenges me, but I feel I usually come out stronger!

  16. This is fabulous, love it! I’d rather go on long runs, but I’m grateful that I can still run!

  17. This is great! Right now I prefer short runs. But I also agree that a long run is good for mental cleansing.

  18. You cover it all, Michelle!
I’m doing a lot of long runs right now so I will have more time to think about your poem.
The thing I love most is all the time to release the brain chatter! 😄

  19. Oh, sigh. Did you guys choose this topic just to torture me? Just kidding of course. I’m sure everyone is sick and tired of hearing my complain about not being able to do long runs right now- I definitely love them. And I love this “ode”. Thanks!

  20. I love this! It is so true you never know what the long run will bring but somehow it can be just what you need

  21. There’s definitely a calm about running longer distances. I think I may want to start doing long runs again in the Fall, but for now I’m enjoying short runs.

  22. This is amazing. Several years ago I posted the same poem. Great minds.

I prefer long runs. I am not rushed like I am during the week during my short run. I just squeeze them in anywhere. Anytime. For the long run I can pick a scenic route and run as long as I need.
