Runfessions of an Injured Runner

Well, here we are again on the last Friday of the month, which means it’s time to cleanse our soles (pun intended) with some runfessions. So let’s get to it, shall we?

I runfess that I am not loving running right now…there I said it. As long as my runs stay 5 miles or less, and at an easy peasy pace, all the body parts cooperate and it’s all good. But add miles or really push the pace, and I’m gritting my teeth – no bueno.

Unfortunately, my hip pain has returned with a vengeance and has left me on non-speaking terms with my training plan. I runfess that this cycle of injuries I’ve been dealing with this year (hip then ankle, now hip again) has been exacerbated by my pushing to get back to training too soon.

I runfess that it’s hard to sit on the sidelines while others are preparing for races – FOMO is a powerful thing…the struggle is real!

I runfess that if I am being totally honest, I’ve probably known for a while that I was pushing my luck with this training plan, but how could I possibly not have a fall goal race…ah denial!

While I’m not usually one to throw a pity party, I runfess that I’ve had a moment or two over the past month where I have asked myself if I should give up running. Now, of course, that didn’t last very long – it’s just the frustration talking.

I am certainly not going to stop running. I am going to back-off of following a training plan, put racing on the back burner, focus on a treatment plan for this SI Joint, and embrace my time in the gym, on a yoga mat, and the short leisurely runs I can do (I’ll take 3 or 4 miles vs none!).

So what are you run-fessing?

I’m linking up with Marcia for Runfessions, and Rachel and Lacey & Meranda for the Friday Five link-up!

  1. I’m so sorry Michelle 🙁 I know it’s been a very up and down year for you when it comes to running. Do you think total rest might help your hip injury? I know it would be difficult, but maybe a month off would help it heal and you can focus on strength training vs. running.

  2. Sorry that you’re dealing with this cycle of injuries 🙁 FOMO is really a pain. I try to avoid signing up for all the races but then feel that twinge of regret when I see other people post about it. I hope the recovery goes well!

  3. Recurring injuries get a big boo from me, and I’m not just saying that cuz of Halloween. I hope you get this sorted sooner than later, Michelle. FOMO sucks!

  4. So sorry to hear, but I think you are doing the right thing by changing your focus. FOMO is real, but it’s less powerful when you have different goals. Hang in there.

  5. I know how you feel with the whole injury cycle and FOMO. It sucks big time. Take some time off and let your body heal. You’ll come back stronger for it and your next race will be amazing. Hang in there. <3

  6. Sounds like a very frustrating year injury-wise. I hope you can find some other goals you can be happy with while you are healing.

  7. I like your plan to embrace what you are capable of right now. Rehabbing and getting stronger will help you in the long run too! I’m always bummed when I can’t run as much as I want to, but like you, I try to do other things like lift and PT stuff to at least make my time off worthwhile.

  8. Oh no, I am so sorry that you are going through this.
I hate that broken ankle recovery has me missing running and I runfess that I am counting days – 54 FYI since the break and the last time I ran.

  9. Oh, how I can relate. I haven’t been able to completely shake the injury bench for the last couple of years which forces me to do what I can when I can. And/Or, hop on Sanity. It’s mentally exhausting! (HUGS)

  10. I hope that you’re back up and at it sooner than later. FOMO is definitely a real thing, and its so hard to sit on the sidelines, especially when you’re injured.

  11. Aw, I’m really sorry to hear that you’ve had another injury setback. It is so frustrating when you want to put in the hard work and your body fights you. But you are always great about doing your exercises and treatments – hope you are on the mend soon!

    • Thanks, Janelle – I think the trick for me this time will be to stick with the exercises and treatments longer and fight the urge to want to train for something. Easier said than done, right?

  12. ((group hug)) FOMO is a nasty &itch, especially when all of the ones you’re wishing to trade places with are not appreciating what THEY can do. Am I right? 😉 But, I think you have a good strategy… focusing on the shorter runs, while you give your hip some TLC, will help you cope. Patience is tough, especially when working through injury/healing. Stay strong! YOU have a huge cheering section if you need some encouragement 😉

  13. I think we all go through cycles of not enjoying running. Usually when I feel like that, I take a step back and do something else for a little while. Running will be there when you are ready

  14. It must be the change in seasons because I’m struggling with my weight training. I’m switching up my weight and reps to get me feeling psyched again. I hope your hip feels better soon and the love of running returns quickly!

  15. Sorry to hear that your injury is coming back. I know how frustrating it can be. Just do what you can and try not to get discouraged(I know easier said than done) The races will always be there!
